Role Overview

The AI Field Engineer role at Fireworks AI in San Mateo is a hands-on technical position that embeds directly with ambitious customers and technology partners to turn complex artificial intelligence problems into production systems. This role is well-suited for an experienced engineer who enjoys writing code, solving infrastructure challenges, and collaborating closely with high-velocity product teams.

Key Responsibilities

Build end-to-end proofs of concept and minimum viable products alongside customer engineering teams while working inside their codebases and infrastructure.
Architect inference foundations for generative AI products and run load tests to establish latency, throughput, and cost baselines.
Guide customers on model selection, fine-tuning strategies including SFT, DPO, and RFT, and evaluation methodologies.
Lead structured discovery conversations to unpack customer pain points and own the technical relationship from the initial engagement to production deployment.
Translate recurring customer feedback and deployment patterns into concrete product proposals for internal engineering and product teams.

Requirements

Five or more years of experience in a hands-on, customer-facing technical role such as a Forward Deployed Engineer, Applied AI Engineer, Solutions Architect, or machine learning engineer with field exposure.
Demonstrated ability to build production software and ship code running in external production environments.
Strong programming skills in Python with the ability to read, write, and debug production code.
Familiarity with Kubernetes, infrastructure engineering, and cloud infrastructure platforms including AWS, Azure, and GCP.
Working knowledge of the large language model stack, covering inference trade-offs, model serving, and fine-tuning workflows.
Exceptional communication skills required to interact with machine learning engineers and present architecture to leadership.
Experience building or integrating agentic systems, tool-use chains, or AI-native developer toolchains.

Nice to Have

Ten or more years of experience in technical field or engineering roles.
Familiarity with inference serving frameworks such as vLLM, SGLang, and TensorRT-LLM.
Prior background at a company with a forward-deployed or embedded engineering model, or experience as a technical founder.
Track record of taking generative AI prototypes to production-scale deployments.
Hands-on experience with hyperscaler AI platforms like Azure AI Foundry, AWS Bedrock, Amazon SageMaker, or GCP Vertex.
