About this role
Professionals who thrive in ambiguity and want to shape a founding function from scratch will find an ideal home in this role. Modal is scaling its infrastructure layer to support artificial intelligence workloads for category-defining companies, operating with a rapidly growing team in San Francisco. As one of the first account managers, the incoming person will establish the commercial motion, take ownership of a book of business from day one, and drive revenue through retention and expansion across accounts running heavy GPU and inference operations.
Operating without an inherited playbook or established territory map, the successful candidate will partner closely with technical buyers ranging from developers to executives. This commercial position carries a direct revenue target while requiring enough technical fluency to navigate conversations about infrastructure, model fine-tuning, and batch jobs. Individuals who combine commercial instincts with a hands-on understanding of developer tooling will do exceptionally well in building out processes that the broader team will eventually scale.
What you will do
- Build Modal's account management function from scratch and iterate on the strategy as the business scales.
- Own and deliver on a revenue target across an assigned book of accounts.
- Grow initial customer use cases, expand into secondary workflows, and drive standardization across the platform.
- Engage directly with engineering teams regarding their workloads while pulling in technical resources when needed.
- Collaborate across sales, solutions, support, and product teams to expand accounts and feed customer signals into the roadmap.
- Travel to customer sites as needed to support key accounts and uncover expansion opportunities.
What you need
- Bring customer-facing experience owning or supporting a revenue target in a highly technical, consumption-driven business.

- Exercise strong ownership by running a book of business with organization, predictability, and fast pacing.
- Maintain a high learning velocity with an action-oriented mindset that moves fast and iterates continuously.
- Partner cross-functionally with low ego, high accountability, and a willingness to seek early feedback.
