About this role

Professionals who thrive in complex regulatory environments and possess deep political fluency in the American Midwest will find this position well-suited to their background. Anthropic operates at the intersection of a research lab, a policy think tank, and a technology startup, focusing on the creation of reliable and safe artificial intelligence systems. This role exists to guide regional engagement across Midwestern states as policymakers grapple with the rise of transformative technology.

The person hired will direct legislative and regulatory strategy throughout the region, building substantive relationships with governors' offices, state attorneys general, and local municipal leaders. Daily work involves tracking policy proceedings, coordinating closely with internal legal and communications teams, and representing the organization at public hearings and regional forums. Candidates who succeed here typically combine a background in political execution with an ability to translate technical AI concepts into straightforward language for public servants.

What you will do

  • Serve as the primary regional lead for state and local government affairs across the Midwestern United States.
  • Build and maintain direct relationships with state legislators, legislative staff, governors' offices, and attorneys general.
  • Engage with municipal leaders such as mayors, city councils, and county commissions whose decisions impact company operations.
  • Track state and local legislation concerning AI and technology, providing intelligence to inform broader company strategy.
  • Establish durable partnerships with local chambers of commerce, economic development groups, labor organizations, and universities.
  • Represent the organization at legislative hearings, public forums, and regional events while managing outside lobbyists.

  • Understand the mechanics of state legislatures, executive branches, and the boundaries of local authority.
  • Show a proven track record of executing strategic objectives and delivering measurable outcomes in government affairs.
  • Prepare for regular travel across the assigned Midwestern region.

Nice to have
