Staff+ Software Engineer, Storage + Transfer
About this role
Engineers who thrive in collaborative, high-trust environments and possess a deep background in distributed storage systems will find this opportunity at Anthropic appealing. The storage team builds and maintains exabyte-scale, multi-cloud infrastructure that supports everything from model training and inference to product development and company operations. As Claude scales, this group focuses on designing secure, reliable, and cost-efficient blob storage platforms that handle rapidly increasing data volume and complexity.
In this capacity, you will shape technical architecture, own high-stakes storage decisions, and lead large-scale migrations across varying infrastructures and regions. You will collaborate directly with research, infrastructure, and business teams to understand access patterns and translate user needs into scalable system designs. Ultimately, the role exists to ensure that critical data remains securely and speedily accessible, empowering the broader organization to ship safe AI capabilities at speed.
What you will do
- Shape the technical strategy and architecture for storage layers to support large-scale ML and training workloads.
- Partner closely with cloud service providers, networking, and datacenter teams to build robust infrastructure primitives.
- Make principled tradeoffs across durability, availability, consistency, performance, security, and cost.
- Break large problems into deliverable milestones and lead cross-functional teams to ship new capabilities safely.
- Work across backend stacks, abstraction layers, and clients to provide users with simple and consistent data interfaces.
- Plan and lead large migrations of critical workloads while minimizing disruption for users.
- Participate in and improve operations, covering SLOs, observability, capacity planning, incident response, and on-call rotations.
- Stay hands-on in code and production environments, particularly within the most complex and critical areas.
What you need
- Demonstrated experience designing, building, and operating a large-scale distributed storage system in production.
- Deep understanding of storage system fundamentals including replication, erasure coding, consistency models, and metadata management.
- Experience serving as an owner, tech lead, or architect for a large and complex infrastructure system.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals with hands-on coding ability in at least one systems language like C++, Rust, Go, or Java.
- Experience operating and steering critical infrastructure at scale, including security, incident response, and cost efficiency.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with experience driving alignment across multiple organizations.
Benefits
- Competitive compensation and benefits
- Optional equity donation matching
- Generous vacation
- Parental leave
- Flexible working hours
