Staff+ Software Engineer, Platform Portability
About this role
The Staff+ Software Engineer, Platform Portability role at Anthropic involves designing and building multi-cloud deployment infrastructure to train and serve Claude across diverse environments. This position is ideal for an experienced distributed systems engineer based in San Francisco, New York City, or Seattle who wants to accelerate safe and reliable AI development.
Role Overview
Anthropic trains and serves Claude across multiple cloud providers and accelerator platforms. The Platform Portability team provides the abstractions, tooling, and deployment infrastructure necessary to achieve this without requiring every engineering team to master different cloud ecosystems. As a Staff+ Software Engineer on this team, the selected candidate will design and build systems that enable the organization to bring up new capacity, ship platforms to cloud provider marketplaces, and migrate workloads between providers with high confidence. The work directly impacts how rapidly and reliably frontier AI reaches users everywhere.
Key Responsibilities
Work spans two core workstreams: portable infrastructure and delivering Claude on partner clouds. Responsibilities include building provider-agnostic abstractions for storage, messaging, and connectivity to support frontier model inference scale. Engineers design tooling that allows internal teams to provision, configure, and operate services seamlessly across multiple clouds using a consistent interface. Additional duties involve owning end-to-end delivery pipelines for third-party cloud platforms, collaborating with external cloud partners and internal stakeholders, reviewing architectural designs, mentoring engineers on multi-cloud patterns, and participating in the on-call rotation.
Requirements
Candidates must have a minimum of eight years of practical experience building and operating production distributed systems. Applicants need a background in owning large-scale infrastructure systems and leading complex, cross-team technical projects from design to production. Essential qualifications include running the same production workload across multiple cloud providers, understanding diverse cloud IAM models and networking primitives, writing production code in a general-purpose programming language such as Python or Rust, and working with Kubernetes and Infrastructure as Code like Terraform. Familiarity with ML infrastructure, hyperscaler marketplaces, and security or data residency requirements for regulated environments is also required.
Nice to Have
Experience with security, compliance, or data residency for regulated or sovereign cloud environments is beneficial.
