Role Overview

Anthropic is hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Node Infra in London to lead the technical strategy for hardware capacity and cluster management that powers frontier AI research. Key Responsibilities

Own the technical roadmap and strategy for node lifecycle management, including ingestion, bring-up, health checks, and automated repairs.
Drive cross-team initiatives to build and scale massive AI compute clusters across multiple cloud providers and accelerator families.
Design and operate automated systems that detect, isolate, and remediate unhealthy hardware to maximize fleet mean time between interruptions.
Define overarching infrastructure architecture and solve complex technical challenges independently or by guiding other engineers.
Partner closely with cloud providers and internal research, inference, and product groups to align long-term compute and infrastructure strategies.
Establish and evolve operational excellence practices, such as incident response, on-call rotations, and postmortem cultures.
Provide technical mentorship and coaching to support the growth of nearby software engineers.

Requirements

Deep and demonstrable expertise in cloud platforms, distributed systems, and reliability.
Strong proficiency in at least one systems programming language, alongside Terraform experience for infrastructure as code.
Hands-on background working with machine learning accelerators like GPUs, TPUs, or Trainium.
Proven track record of leading complex, multi-quarter technical initiatives spanning multiple teams or systems.
Ability to build alignment among senior stakeholders and communicate effectively across all organizational levels.
Minimum of 7 years of professional software engineering experience, including holding a technical lead role.

Nice to Have

Experience managing hyperscale compute infrastructure consisting of 10,000 or more nodes, covering capacity and efficiency.
Depth in Kubernetes internals, cluster orchestration systems, or node provisioning pipelines.
Low-level systems background involving kernels, virtualization, firmware, device drivers, or hardware diagnostics daemons.
Familiarity with high-performance networking standards for distributed machine learning workloads, such as EFA, RDMA, or InfiniBand.
Demonstrated production reliability ownership for latency-sensitive, high-throughput systems.
Contributions to relevant open-source software projects like Kubernetes, container runtimes, or the Linux kernel.
