Role Overview

NetDocuments is seeking a Staff Software Engineer to help lead the technical direction of a backend engineering team. This position focuses on designing distributed, cloud-native systems that process high volumes of data securely while respecting strict legal industry compliance and data protection boundaries. The chosen candidate will partner closely with Product, Design, and platform teams to build scalable solutions that turn institutional knowledge into actionable insights for both people and artificial intelligence.

Key Responsibilities

Serve as a hands-on technical leader for the engineering team, defining technical direction, architectural standards, and best practices.
Architect and build production-grade, cloud-native backend services, event-driven systems, and data pipelines.
Design resilient systems that stay reliable, performant, and cost-effective as data volumes grow across multiple regions.
Instrument services with comprehensive logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and telemetry to proactively diagnose and resolve issues.
Collaborate with Product and Design teams to translate complex requirements into durable systems while mentoring engineers across various experience levels.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
Minimum of 8 years of professional software engineering experience delivering production-grade systems at scale.
At least 3 years of experience providing technical leadership and influencing engineering direction and practices.
Deep experience designing and operating distributed, cloud-native backend systems, ideally utilizing AWS services such as ECS, Lambda, SQS, DynamoDB, and S3.
Strong background in event-driven and service-oriented architectures, handling asynchronous processing, queueing, idempotency, and system failures.
Backend development experience in a modern programming language, with familiarity in Python, Java, or Go alongside preferred C#/.NET stacks.
Working familiarity with modern AI applications in production software, automated testing, CI/CD practices, and operational observability.

Nice to Have

Experience building search, retrieval, or data-intensive systems at scale.
Familiarity with modern retrieval and AI techniques including semantic search, vector search, embeddings, and retrieval-augmented generation.
Experience operating high-throughput data processing pipelines and managing their associated costs.
Background in building document management, content services, or B2B SaaS applications for regulated industries like law.
Contributions to open-source projects or technical writing.

Salary and Benefits

The cash compensation range for this position is $170,000 to $190,000, including on-target earnings. NetDocuments provides 90% company-covered healthcare premiums, HSA company contributions, and a 401(k) match at 4% with immediate vesting.
