Role Overview

Anthropic is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Claude Design team within Engineering & Design. Claude Design is a new product from Anthropic Labs that allows users to collaborate with Claude to build interactive prototypes, product mockups, slides, and marketing materials. Engineers joining now will define the trajectory of the product. The role centers on bridging research breakthroughs and real-world applications by crafting the canvas, real-time editing, design-system inference, and AI-driven generation experiences that make AI feel indispensable.

Key Responsibilities

Build and ship core product surfaces including the design canvas, real-time editing, inline comments, and live adjustment controls.
Collaborate directly with research teams to translate frontier generation capabilities into intuitive design experiences.
Partner with designers, internal test users, and external partners to gather feedback and validate product concepts.
Establish technical direction for complex frontend challenges such as editor architecture, real-time collaboration, rich import/export, and scaling performance.
Design and execute experiments to test product hypotheses, evaluate generation quality, and measure user engagement.
Maintain a high quality bar by treating latency, responsiveness, and reliability as first-class priorities.
Strengthen handoffs to Claude Code so that user designs translate cleanly into production.
Operate as a technical leader on a small team, helping shape the roadmap, making pragmatic architectural choices, and mentoring engineers.

Requirements

Minimum of 8+ years of experience building full-stack applications with deep frontend expertise and a background in zero-to-one startup environments.
Track record of setting technical direction for teams while staying hands-on in the code.
Strong design sensibility with a focus on interaction details, motion, and visual polish.
Proficiency across modern web stacks such as React, TypeScript, Node.js, and Python, handling complex client-side state, APIs, and cloud technologies.
Highly user-centric mindset with the ability to validate ideas independently and communicate complex AI capabilities clearly.
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Ability to work on a location-based hybrid policy requiring time in an office at least 25% of the time.

Nice to Have

Extensive background with visual collaboration and creative tools like Figma, Canva, or Adobe Creative Cloud.
Hands-on experience designing UI/UX for AI-powered applications.
Experience conducting user research, user interviews, and usability testing.
Deep frontend expertise in canvas rendering, complex editor UIs, design-system tooling, or graphics work including WebGL, shaders, 3D, and animation.
Familiarity with real-time multiplayer editing applications or complex high-performance frontend interactions.
