About this role

Anthropic is seeking a Staff+ Software Engineer to build and operate a brand new caching layer as a managed service across offices in San Francisco, New York City, or Seattle. This foundational role suits an experienced infrastructure specialist ready to drive technical direction and optimize performance for Claude.

Role Overview

This is a foundational position within the Databases organization at Anthropic. The Caching team owns the systems that keep high-traffic paths fast and correct, including a managed Redis fleet, company-wide client libraries, and CDC-driven cache invalidation. The chosen candidate will set the technical direction for caching, working alongside product and research teams to deliver seamless caching infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Shape the technical direction for caching infrastructure supporting Product and Research.
Architect, build, and run a managed Redis fleet scaling for millions of users within the Claude ecosystem.
Author client libraries and developer abstractions to establish correct caching by default.
Design change data capture (CDC) cache invalidation ensuring data consistency with source-of-truth databases.
Build caching solutions operating across Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, and first-party environments.
Tune latency, hit rates, reliability, and cost efficiency across critical paths.
Implement observability and debugging tooling for cache behavior.
Partner with cross-functional teams to understand access patterns and make build-versus-buy technology choices.

Requirements

Significant software engineering background creating and running production distributed systems.
Deep understanding of caching architectures, consistency tradeoffs, failure modes, and invalidation strategies.
Production experience operating Redis, Memcached, or related in-memory data stores.
Proficiency in Python or a systems programming language such as Go, Rust, Java, or C++ at scale.
Proven track record leading complex, large-scale infrastructure initiatives.
Capability to balance rapid delivery with production reliability standards.
Bachelor's degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Minimum of 10 years building and scaling distributed infrastructure, including 3+ years leading large-scale projects or teams.
Ability to work on a location-based hybrid policy requiring at least 25% of time spent in an office.

Nice to Have

Experience building internal managed infrastructure platforms consumed by engineering teams.
Background using streaming data infrastructure or change data capture tools like Debezium.
Experience operating managed offerings such as Redis Cluster, Valkey, ElastiCache, or Memorystore at scale.
History of designing internal client libraries or SDKs.
Familiarity scaling infrastructure during periods of rapid company growth.
Background with hybrid cloud or multi-cloud deployments.
Contributions to database internals, caching systems, or related open source projects.

Salary and Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $320,000 to $485,000 USD.
