Role Overview

Anthropic is hiring a Staff+ Software Engineer to lead the Auth & Identity team, which handles every login, API key, OAuth token, access decision, and organization record across the entire product suite. As the platform transitions to support agentic workloads alongside human users, this team defines modern identity and access management. The role sits at the intersection of horizontal core services and vertical administrative product experiences. Candidates will navigate zero-to-one architecture challenges and manage complex, live migrations for systems handling massive traffic.

Key Responsibilities

Own critical, high-traffic platform systems end-to-end, spanning initial design, rollout, operations, and ongoing iteration.
Shape the technical strategy and direction for identity, authorization, and access control across the company.
Design credential management for autonomous agents and long-running workloads.
Route every access decision through a unified authorization system ensuring low latency, strict security, and multi-region resilience.
Establish a first-class identity model for service accounts and agents, linking them seamlessly to other environments.
Partner closely with product, security, and infrastructure teams to build intuitive, self-service platform primitives.

Requirements

8+ years of professional experience building and operating backend or platform systems at scale, focusing on identity, authentication, authorization, or security-adjacent infrastructure.
Demonstrated working knowledge of technologies such as OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, SCIM, JWTs, token exchange, workload identity federation, policy engines like Cedar or OPA, or RBAC and resource-level access control.
Strong commitment to reliability, security best practices, failure mode analysis, and robust on-call ownership.
Proven ability to execute large migrations in live, high-traffic production environments using shadow modes and incremental rollouts.
Capability to navigate complex technical ambiguity independently and communicate effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.
Familiarity with incorporating AI tools into the software development workflow.
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Nice to Have

Experience working with globally distributed databases and multi-region service architectures.
Practical coding experience in Go, Python, Rust, or TypeScript within rapidly changing codebases.
Prior engineering background focusing on enterprise identity integrations with major identity providers and cloud IAM systems.
