About this role

Safe Software is seeking an experienced developer to join the Cloud Applications team and take on a leading technical role for the FME AI Service, AI Assist Plugin, and upcoming artificial intelligence products. This remote-friendly position in British Columbia suits a software engineer with strong backend depth and an experimental mindset for building agentic LLM systems.

Role Overview

As a Staff Software Developer for AI Products, the individual acts as a technical leader within the Cloud Applications development team. The role focuses on designing new features, maintaining current functionalities, and contributing to the support of live software applications. This position involves close collaboration with product managers, UX designers, QA professionals, and customer experience teams within an agile, Kanban-driven environment.

Key Responsibilities

Design and construct server-side APIs and services utilizing FastAPI.
Build modular agentic workflows to expand the capabilities of the FME platform.
Stay current with artificial intelligence and large language model tooling developments, integrating relevant insights into company products.
Participate in the complete development life cycle, from specification shaping to writing clean code, unit testing, and conducting code reviews.
Collaborate, support, and share expertise with colleagues while maintaining and enhancing existing codebases.
Work alongside product owners and designers to ensure a consistent user experience.
Improve the delivery and building of AI services to minimize query latency and enhance assistant response quality.
Investigate and resolve bugs and anomalies in live applications, and participate in a light on-call rotation.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
A minimum of 7 years of background working on production backend systems.
Proven history of leading technically ambiguous projects and elevating surrounding engineers.
Practical work history with agentic LLM-based applications, including RAG, prompt engineering, context engineering, and tool calling.
Demonstrated experience evaluating LLM systems through evaluation sets, quality metrics, tracing, and debugging non-deterministic behavior.
Proficiency in at least one modern backend language with the adaptability to learn others.
Experience with modern backend web frameworks like FastAPI.
Empirical mindset focused on experimentation and data-driven decisions.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with evaluation libraries such as Ragas, DeepEval, promptfoo, or TruLens.
Experience with LLM observability and tracing tools including LangSmith, Langfuse, or Arize Phoenix.
Statistical literacy involving A/B testing, sample sizing, and significance.
Background in data science or machine learning.
Experience with spatial data processing, FME, or other data integration and ETL tools.
Working knowledge of vector databases, embeddings, chunking, and retrieval strategies.
Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and cloud services such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Understanding of common web security vulnerabilities and LLM-specific security risks.
