About this role

Safe Software is hiring a full-time remote Staff AI Engineer to design, build, and deploy production-grade artificial intelligence systems across the business. This hands-on position suits an experienced technologist with a strong background in software development and machine learning who wants to shape enterprise AI architectures.

Role Overview

Safe Software is seeking a Staff AI Engineer to own the complete lifecycle of artificial intelligence applications. Working within the AI Enablement department, this role focuses on creating shared capabilities, engineering standards, and robust platforms that help various departments adopt artificial intelligence effectively and securely. The professional in this position will handle everything from data preparation and model training to deployment, evaluation, and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, evaluate, deploy, and operate end-to-end artificial intelligence and machine learning systems in production environments.
Architect multi-agent and agentic systems, incorporating orchestration, task routing, shared state, tool use, and failure recovery.
Create enterprise knowledge and retrieval platforms across structured and unstructured data using embeddings, hybrid search, and access-controlled retrieval.
Integrate advanced solutions with enterprise APIs, databases, applications, and governed tools.
Establish automated testing, observability, and evaluation protocols to mitigate hallucination risks, monitor latency, and track model quality.
Design secure systems using least-privilege access, auditability, and protection against prompt injection or data leakage.
Provide cross-functional technical mentorship, lead design reviews, and establish reusable libraries and engineering standards.
Evaluate emerging large language models and frameworks to make evidence-based adoption recommendations.

Requirements

Eight or more years of total experience across software engineering and artificial intelligence or machine learning.
Three or more years of dedicated experience building and operating production-grade artificial intelligence systems at scale.
Strong software engineering foundation, particularly using Python or comparable backend technologies.
Practical experience developing, fine-tuning, evaluating, deploying, and monitoring machine learning models.
Applied enterprise experience in use cases like chatbots, retrieval-augmented generation, intelligent document processing, or workflow automation.
Solid understanding of generative artificial intelligence, large language models, retrieval systems, and agent-based architectures.
Experience with production data pipelines, model-serving infrastructure, application security, and system reliability.

Nice to Have

Experience with workflow and agent orchestration tools such as LangGraph, Semantic Kernel, AutoGen, or CrewAI.
Working knowledge of vector databases, embeddings, semantic search, and reranking.
Familiarity with platforms like Databricks, Snowflake, Amazon Bedrock, or Azure AI.
Exposure to Model Context Protocol, agent-to-agent communication, self-hosted open-weight models, and hybrid architectures.
