Staff Robotics Software Engineer - Mission Autonomy
About this role
Staff Robotics Engineers lead the delivery of vehicle perception and planning capability integrated into defense technology products, acting as technical leads, senior individual contributors, and team leaders. The Maneuver Dominance team builds Thunder, an autonomous attack rotorcraft designed to fly low and in formation while managing weapons, sensors, and radios in contested spectrums. Team members own the navigation and autonomy stack, resolving antenna constraints and delivering safe navigation, collision avoidance, and situational awareness.
Professionals in this capacity handle end-to-end outcome ownership, driving the architecture, design, and evolution of safe vehicle autonomy across the entire product life cycle. Candidates coordinate with cross-functional software, mechanical, and systems engineering teams while engaging stakeholders to define multi-year technical roadmaps. Ideal engineers combine deep technical mastery in perception and planning with the leadership capacity to mentor junior staff and guide complex autonomous systems from concept to deployment.
What you will do
- Design and deliver multi-year software roadmaps spanning multiple teams and stakeholders.
- Lead teams that build trusted safe navigation, collision avoidance, and situational awareness systems.
- Perform hands-on architecture and implementation across the perception and planning stack using computer vision, sensor fusion, and machine learning.
- Collaborate with internal and external engineering groups to define interfacing requirements and ensure effective system integration.
- Conduct thorough testing and validation of algorithms through simulation and real-world flight experiments.
- Travel up to twenty percent of the time to co-locate with end-users and other engineering teams.
What you need
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Engineering, or a relevant field, or possess equivalent experience.
- Bring seven or more years of experience in C++ and/or Python software development.
