Role Overview

The Staff Data Scientist, Watchlist position at Socure is a full-time remote role based in California for candidates located in New York, San Francisco, Seattle, or Miami. This senior individual contributor role suits an experienced machine learning professional ready to shape the future of global AML compliance and identity trust infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

Improve the quality, coverage, and freshness of Watchlist data through next-generation ingestion pipelines and rigorous data quality analysis.

Apply NLP and AI to classify and enrich raw source data into normalized schemas, extracting structured entity attributes from unstructured sanctions, PEP, and adverse media sources.

Build and improve NLP systems for entity resolution, including Information Extraction and Named Entity Recognition pipelines to deduplicate entities and resolve aliases.

Design and scale advanced NLP models and algorithms for real-time name matching and identity classification across multilingual data sources.

Build multi-signal risk scoring combining name similarity, geography, and list type into unified risk scores.

Develop backtesting and counterfactual analysis capabilities to measure how model adjustments affect screening outcomes.

Build mathematical analysis and feature engineering to detect AML risk patterns across transaction data and payment message fields.

Lead technical initiatives, collaborate with Product and Engineering, prototype advanced techniques, and mentor peers.

Requirements

Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.

7+ years of experience in data science or machine learning with work in NLP, entity resolution, or information extraction.

Hands-on experience building and deploying NLP pipelines for entity extraction, named entity recognition, and record linkage at production scale.

Strong proficiency in Python and major machine learning libraries like PyTorch, spaCy, and HuggingFace Transformers.

Strong SQL proficiency and experience with large-scale data pipelines and production ML systems.

Excellent communication skills to translate model performance tradeoffs for non-technical audiences.

Must be located in one of the approved talent hubs: New York, San Francisco, Seattle, or Miami. Note that visa sponsorship is not available.

Nice to Have

Experience in AML, sanctions screening, adverse media, or financial crime detection.

Familiarity with multilingual NLP and non-Latin script processing.

Experience with LLMs and agentic AI frameworks such as LangChain or LangGraph.
