About this role

The Staff Data Scientist, Planning and Forecasting position at Quince in Palo Alto involves building out a brand-new supply chain planning science capability from scratch. This role is well-suited for an experienced data science specialist who wants to take full ownership of foundational forecasting and optimization systems in a fast-paced retail environment.

Role Overview

Quince is scaling its supply chain planning science capability and requires a senior specialist to write the roadmap and drive load-bearing components end-to-end. The individual in this position will handle demand forecasting at multiple geographic scales, methodology-agnostic forecasting tournaments, inventory placement optimization, vendor performance modelling, and raw material signal generation. This is a hands-on role with full ownership of the methodology, production models, and iteration loops, requiring close collaboration with charter leadership, engineering teams, and planning operators.

Key Responsibilities

Own science workstreams end-to-end, covering forecasting tournaments, inventory placement optimization, vendor performance systems, and raw material signal pipelines.
Hold the methodological standard for the assigned area, determining model selection, evaluation criteria, and handling sparse or noisy data.
Partner with the Planning Tools engineering team to communicate platform needs and address production constraints.
Establish experimentation discipline across the science team, including clean splits, honest backtests, and rigorous hypothesis testing.
Drive an AI-native science workflow incorporating LLM-aided exploratory data analysis, agentic feature discovery, and AI-augmented experiment design.
Mentor other data scientists on the team through code reviews, design discussions, and direct teaching.
Partner with planning operators to translate operational reality into structured modeling problems and communicate model outputs into actionable decisions.

Requirements

Eight or more years of applied data science or operations research experience, featuring deep expertise in one or two domains relevant to supply chain planning.
Demonstrated ownership of modeling workstreams from problem framing through production deployment, iteration, and measured business impact.
Real methodological breadth across classical, machine learning, and AI-driven forecasting and operations research approaches.
Engineering fluency to independently manage feature pipelines, experiments, and model serving.
Proven background in AI-native science practices, including detailed examples of utilizing AI tooling while maintaining strict methodological standards.
Track record of mentoring other scientists to help them develop their professional craft.
