Commure is seeking a Staff Backend Engineer in Mountain View, CA to design and operate the distributed backend systems powering its next-generation ambient AI healthcare products. This role suits an experienced engineer who enjoys building dependable, scalable infrastructure for complex machine learning workflows.

Role Overview

Commure builds an AI operating system for healthcare to eliminate administrative burdens for clinicians. The Staff Backend Engineer will work across audio ingestion, media processing, inference orchestration, distributed workflows, storage, observability, and cloud infrastructure. The position focuses on making complex distributed systems dependable, handling failure modes, and ensuring fast, reliable experiences for clinicians.

Key Responsibilities

Design, build, and operate backend systems supporting Ambient AI products across mobile and web platforms.
Develop and evolve inference workflows that coordinate transcription, diarization, language models, clinical extraction, and summarization.
Build orchestration systems for long-running workflows, managing scheduling, queueing, retries, timeouts, fallbacks, model routing, and workflow state recovery.
Define and maintain service-level objectives for critical workflows regarding availability, processing latency, completion rates, and data durability.
Build robust observability across services using structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, and alerting.
Lead incident response, post-incident analysis, and systemic failure reduction through automation and better architecture.
Partner with mobile, product, AI, security, and clinical teams while mentoring other engineers.

Requirements

Eight or more years of professional backend or infrastructure engineering experience.
Experience designing, building, and operating production distributed systems.
Strong proficiency in at least one modern backend programming language.
Experience with asynchronous processing, message queues, event-driven systems, or durable workflow execution.
Solid understanding of distributed-systems concepts like idempotency, consistency, concurrency, backpressure, and failure isolation.
Experience operating services in a cloud environment including deployment, monitoring, scaling, and incident response.
Strong debugging skills across application, infrastructure, and dependency boundaries.

Nice to Have

Experience building speech-to-text, diarization, transcription, or audio-based machine-learning workflows.
Experience orchestrating large language models or multi-model inference pipelines in production.
Familiarity with durable execution platforms like Temporal, and event-streaming technologies like Kafka, Pub/Sub, or SQS.
Experience with containerization, Kubernetes, infrastructure as code, and cloud-native deployments.
Exposure to healthcare, HIPAA, SOC 2, encryption, and regulated environments.
