About this role
The AI Engineering team at Typeform builds the systems and capabilities behind AI products, including Research Flow, a platform for combining quantitative research with qualitative insights. This role exists to guide the technical direction of Research Flow and broader AI products by taking ownership of complex architectural challenges from experimentation to production. The person in this position will design generative AI applications, enterprise RAG systems, and agentic workflows while partnering closely with product managers, software engineers, and data scientists.
Ideal candidates bring substantial experience building and operating production machine learning systems, strong software engineering foundations in Python, and a history of leading complex cross-team technical initiatives. Someone who excels here can balance immediate product delivery needs with long-term scalability, reliability, and security while establishing clear engineering standards and evaluation strategies.
What you will do
- Shape the technical direction of Research Flow by partnering with product and engineering leaders to translate ambitions into delivery priorities.
- Take technical ownership of ambiguous problems from initial exploration through to production delivery using large language models, vector search, and agentic systems.
- Guide the architecture of machine learning services and workflows using Python, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS.
- Define evaluation strategies and release criteria for generative AI applications, establishing automated benchmarks for accuracy, reliability, latency, and cost.
- Establish reusable patterns and technical standards for building, evaluating, deploying, and operating AI systems across teams.
- Mentor engineers and support other technical leads in growing their technical ownership and judgment.
- Work with cross-functional partners to prioritize AI investments based on customer needs, technical feasibility, and business impact.
What you need
- Significant experience building and operating machine learning or AI systems in production with evidence of technical leadership.
- A track record of leading complex engineering initiatives across teams from ambiguous requirements to measurable production outcomes.
- Strong Python and software engineering skills with the ability to contribute directly to production code and design services using frameworks like FastAPI.
- Practical experience building generative AI applications using large language models, RAG, tool use, or agentic systems.
- Strong understanding of enterprise RAG systems including retrieval architecture, chunking, embeddings, reranking, evaluation, and monitoring.
- Experience designing and operating cloud systems using AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD practices.
- Familiarity with event-driven processing, vector databases, and machine learning lifecycle tools such as Kafka and MLflow.

The salary range for this position is $170,000 — $210,000 USD.
