Sr. Technical Writer, Mission Autonomy
About this role
Ensuring that operators and integrators can safely and effectively command collaborative combat aircraft is the primary challenge for this hire. The Mission Autonomy team builds software deployed both onboard air vehicles and within Ground Control Stations to support mission planning, execution, and debriefing. The senior technical writer will bridge the gap between engineering and end-users by producing accurate guides, API references, and S1000D-compliant contract deliverables. Ideal candidates possess a strong background in software documentation, experience working directly with engineering teams, and familiarity with both docs-as-code workflows and structured content authoring environments.
What you will do
- Partner with autonomy, platform integration, and flight test teams to deliver clear documentation on how to configure, integrate, and operate mission autonomy software.
- Document complex autonomy behaviors, operating modes, and contingency handling so that operators and third-party vendors can predict system responses accurately.
- Own and maintain interface and message reference documentation by working directly from source code, schema definitions, and government reference interfaces.
- Build and maintain the infrastructure and tooling needed for scaling documentation content across both internal docs-as-code pipelines and external S1000D authoring environments.
- Lead stakeholders through a documentation roadmap with established milestones, handling intake and triage for requests across the program.
- Ensure contract deliverables align with government reference architecture releases, flight test schedules, and account team requirements.
What you need
- Demonstrated professional experience as a technical writer in a software or technical domain.
- Experience partnering with engineers, product managers, and subject matter experts to translate complex technical concepts into user-focused documentation.
- Familiarity with docs-as-code pipelines, static site generators, and version control workflows.
- Experience with structured content authoring environments such as S1000D and RapidAuthor.
- Strong communication and project management skills to guide cross-functional stakeholders through documentation roadmaps and delivery milestones.
