Role Overview

In this hands-on technical leadership position, the employee will build and scale AI and machine learning-powered patient experiences, including onboarding, ranking, matching, recommendations, and personalization. Rula is at an important stage in its machine learning journey, meaning much of the engineering foundation required to deploy, evaluate, and operate machine learning at scale is still ahead. The professional will tackle high-leverage applied AI problems by developing models, building reusable capabilities, and collaborating closely with the machine learning team on shared infrastructure and architectural decisions.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and improve production machine learning models and AI-powered systems.
Build critical capabilities needed by Patient Engineering.
Partner with the machine learning team on shared infrastructure, models, standards, and architectural decisions.
Determine whether a business problem requires custom machine learning, foundation models, AI services, deterministic software, or a hybrid approach.
Deliver faster, higher-quality AI and machine learning-powered patient experiences.

Requirements

Ten or more years of software and or machine learning engineering experience, including significant work designing, building, deploying, and operating production machine learning systems with measurable business impact.
Proficiency in Python, with experience building scalable systems and personally writing and reviewing production-quality code.
Deep hands-on machine learning expertise and technical leadership across the entire lifecycle, from problem formulation to continuous improvement.
Experience setting technical direction, influencing architecture, mentoring senior engineers, and applying strong judgment regarding architectural approaches.
Demonstrated zero to one experience building shared machine learning infrastructure or reusable capabilities adopted across teams, such as feature infrastructure, inference pipelines, model serving, and evaluation tooling.
Deep experience with recommendation, ranking, relevance, personalization, search, or matching systems.
Strong evaluation and experimentation rigor connecting offline model performance to online experiments and product outcomes.
Hands-on experience building and operating modern foundation model and generative AI systems in production, addressing evaluation, reliability, latency, cost, privacy, safety, and operational tradeoffs.

Nice to Have

Experience helping an organization evolve from early-stage or ad hoc machine learning development toward mature engineering practices.
Experience operating machine learning systems in healthcare, financial services, or other regulated and high-trust environments.

Salary and Benefits

The annual salary range for this position is $242,000 to $287,850 in USD. Full-time employees receive a 100% remote work environment across most U.S. states except Hawaii, comprehensive medical, dental, vision, life, and disability benefits, FSA and HSA options, and 401(k) plan access.
