Role Overview

Sr. Software Engineer, Infrastructure is an engineering role based at Mariana Minerals in San Francisco. The professional in this position takes charge of the core platform that supports MarianaOS, the internal operating system for mineral processing facilities and mines. The selected candidate enables internal development teams by removing operational roadblocks and building streamlined infrastructure paths.

Key Responsibilities

Manage the complete lifecycle of Kubernetes environments, spanning the primary EKS cluster, site clusters, autoscaling, capacity planning, and GitOps deployment workflows.
Design and implement self-service infrastructure capabilities that empower engineers to independently provision databases, preview environments, and scheduled jobs.
Establish default observability across all deployed services for automated metrics, logs, tracing, and alerts.
Deploy and maintain on-premises and edge clusters at operational sites to support camera feed GPU inference and plant data collection.
Oversee cloud cost optimization, budgeting, and resource right-sizing to maintain financial efficiency as the platform scales.
Administer identity, access controls, and secure secrets management procedures.
Handle infrastructure incidents and implement permanent architectural fixes and runbooks to prevent recurring failures.

Requirements

Eight to twelve or more years of professional experience building and operating production infrastructure with deep Kubernetes expertise.
Strong software engineering foundation with the ability to write clean, maintainable code and well-designed abstractions.
Practical background using infrastructure as code tooling such as Pulumi or Terraform alongside GitOps continuous delivery.
Demonstrated history of developing platforms that engineering peers adopt willingly and successfully.
Operational knowledge of observability systems including Prometheus, Grafana, and log aggregation tools.
Proficiency in Python or TypeScript combined with working AWS architectural knowledge.

Nice to Have

Background supporting machine learning or data-heavy workloads like GPU scheduling, pipeline orchestration, or distributed training.
Familiarity with on-premises, edge infrastructure, or constrained industrial networks.
Early-stage startup experience within a fast-growing organization.
Industry domain background in mining, manufacturing, industrial automation, or capital projects.
