Role Overview

Mariana Minerals seeks a Machine Learning Engineering Manager for a player-coach position at the San Francisco headquarters. The person in this role will lead machine learning engineers focused on perception, sensor initiatives, robotics, LLM-powered workflows, and MLOps infrastructure. This position requires balancing people management, technical direction, and hands-on contributions to support industrial automation and applied machine learning operations.

Key Responsibilities

Manage, coach, and grow a team of machine learning engineers across perception, robotics, agentic workflows, and ML platforms.
Define technical direction, system architecture, and quality standards for vision models, robots, and agents.
Partner with technical product managers to translate product priorities into scoped engineering work and reliable delivery commitments.
Own the ML platform and MLOps stack, including training infrastructure, evaluation, deployment, and monitoring.
Establish engineering practices for perception and robotics, covering data collection, labeling, real plant evaluation, and safety.
Oversee engineering practices for LLM and agentic tools, focusing on evaluation, guardrails, cost, and latency.
Manage the interface and shared infrastructure with the software engineering organization.
Oversee the production lifecycle, reliability, deployment, monitoring, and incident response for plant-deployed systems.
Maintain hands-on involvement to review complex work, unblock engineers, and build prototypes.
Handle headcount planning, hiring, and talent pipeline development.

Requirements

Minimum of 6 years of experience in machine learning engineering.
At least 2 years of experience managing machine learning engineers with direct responsibility for hiring, performance, and growth.
Track record of shipping production machine learning systems in at least two areas: computer vision or perception, robotics or embedded machine learning, LLM-powered or agentic applications, or MLOps infrastructure.
Strong software engineering fundamentals for building and operating production systems.
Working fluency with the current foundation model and LLM landscape.
Experience setting technical direction and delivering commitments in a cross-functional environment.
Ability to evaluate technical work, review system designs, and provide constructive feedback.
Exceptional written and verbal communication skills across technical and executive audiences.

Nice to Have

Prior work involving industrial robotics, perception in harsh environments, or closed-loop control of physical systems.
Experience owning an MLOps stack or ML platform used by multiple teams.
Experience shipping agentic or LLM-powered internal tools to users and measuring adoption.
Background in heavy industry, mining, energy, chemicals, manufacturing, industrial automation, or sensor data.
Experience scaling a team from a small group to a functioning organization.
