Role Overview

The Applied AI, Science & Engineering team at Anthropic focuses on connecting Claude with scientists and engineers working in energy, materials, hardware design, and related fields. This position is primarily a software engineering role centered on building agent harnesses, integrations, and evaluations that allow models to execute and validate real research tasks. Candidates split their time between collaborating with partner organizations to understand domain workflows and developing the scalable, repeatable systems that make AI-driven research effective.

Key Responsibilities

Build agent harnesses and research loops to support problem-solving from literature review through hypothesis generation, simulation, analysis, and design iteration.
Integrate scientific computing and simulation software, such as finite element, CFD, electromagnetic, or molecular modeling codes, for model-driven execution at scale.
Design and execute evaluations to verify model performance and accuracy against domain-specific requirements.
Collaborate on-site with partner scientists and engineers to translate open-ended challenges into well-defined, verifiable tasks with clear success criteria.
Prototype solutions and deploy pilots into partner workflows while generalizing successful engagements into shared tools and reusable components.
Act as the technical voice regarding model performance, limits, and tradeoffs for researchers, engineering leads, and non-technical stakeholders.
Partner with internal research and product teams to share model limitations in scientific tasks and guide future developments.

Requirements

Eight or more years of software building experience with strong full-stack fundamentals, ranging from data pipelines to interfaces and tooling.
Experience building production systems with large language models, including agents, tool integration, or evaluations.
Background working on technical problems within a science or engineering discipline like physics, materials, chemistry, or electrical and mechanical engineering.
Track record of zero-to-one execution in startup or startup-like environments.
Ability to work directly with expert users to understand workflows and focus on system architecture.
Sound judgment regarding verification limits and comfort evaluating whether results meet required standards.

Nice to Have

Advanced degree or research experience in a physical science or engineering field.
Hands-on familiarity with scientific computing, simulation, numerical methods, or optimization.
Industrial R&D, national lab, or deep-tech company experience in energy, materials, manufacturing, or hardware.
Background building alongside technical partners or customers in forward-deployed or applied AI roles.
Exposure to machine learning research, reinforcement learning environments, or evaluation design.
