Software Engineer, Rust
About this role
Addressing the challenge of transforming complex sensor streams into actionable intelligence, this role focuses on developing advanced tracking and estimation algorithms for mission-critical defense systems. Operating within the software team, the incoming engineer will architect high-performance Rust software and multi-sensor data fusion systems designed to manage real-time situational awareness.
Day-to-day responsibilities involve designing robust probabilistic reasoning tools, refactoring legacy codebases for scalability, and deploying algorithms that extract clear insights from noisy, incomplete data. Ideal candidates combine strong backgrounds in applied mathematics with practical experience building production-grade systems in Rust.
What you will do
- Define and influence the technical direction of a small engineering team while leveraging expertise in target tracking and state estimation.
- Architect, maintain, and evolve complex software systems by refactoring existing codebases to improve overall performance and scalability.
- Prototype and deploy state-of-the-art algorithms for tracking, multi-sensor data fusion, and state estimation within agile development environments.
- Develop high-performance Rust software for real-time systems, including tactical implementations, simulations, and decision support tools.
- Design and implement robust filters, estimators, and probabilistic reasoning systems to process noisy or ambiguous sensor data.
- Apply software design patterns and architectural best practices to manage technical debt and guide the evolution of production systems.
- Analyze system performance using high-fidelity simulations and statistical techniques to validate technology benefits.
What you need
- Minimum of 5 years of professional software engineering experience alongside a Bachelor's degree in mathematics, physics, engineering, or a related technical field.
- Demonstrated experience managing and evolving software architecture in production environments, including refactoring legacy systems and handling technical debt.
- At least 2 years of experience working on a single codebase or product while maintaining and expanding it as requirements evolved.
- Strong understanding of software design patterns, architectural principles, and best practices for building maintainable systems.
- Proficiency in algorithm design, software development, and statistical modeling, with specific experience using Rust and Python.
- Solid understanding of applied mathematics, including linear algebra, optimization, probability, and stochastic processes.
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
Nice to have
- Experience refactoring and modernizing Rust codebases in production environments
- Contributions to open-source Rust projects or the broader Rust ecosystem
- Experience with concurrent and parallel programming patterns in Rust
- Background in machine learning applied to target tracking, classification, and anomaly detection
- Knowledge of signal processing techniques for interpreting radar, lidar, or EO/IR sensor data
Benefits
- Highly competitive equity grants included in the majority of full-time offers
- Top-tier comprehensive benefits package covering health and recovery
