Role Overview

The Software Engineer – AWS position at LocalStack is a full-time, remote opportunity based in Spain. This role suits professionals with strong engineering fundamentals who enjoy tackling unusual technical challenges by building and refining AWS emulators.

Key Responsibilities

Independently take AWS services from third-party-backed implementations to fully first-party implementations, owning store design for persistence, full API operation coverage, and conformance to LocalStack conventions.
Close parity gaps in owned services by raising snapshot-test coverage against real AWS across the documented API surface, with a measurable reduction in parity defects reported from the field.
Own services end-to-end after they ship, acting as a first responder for triaging and resolving customer-reported parity bugs within a 5-day median.
Contribute reusable test infrastructure such as conformance harnesses, snapshot tooling, and fixtures that other engineers adopt.
Scope and sequence a complete implementation of an emulated service independently by month 12.

Requirements

Professional software engineering experience with strong engineering fundamentals.
Strong programming experience in at least one language, with Python preferred.
Experience working from documentation, specifications, public APIs, or observable system behavior to reproduce how a system works.
A strong testing mindset, utilizing tests as a tool for understanding and designing systems.
Hands-on experience with AI coding and agentic development tools.
Hands-on experience building, deploying, and operating applications against a cloud provider, with AWS preferred or GCP and Azure as relevant.
Fast learning and strong problem-solving skills to navigate incomplete information effectively.
Experience working in a product-based environment with a strong product mindset.

Nice to Have

Open-source contribution experience, particularly sustained involvement in an existing project.
Experience with distributed systems, storage, or protocol conformance.
Deep AWS expertise.
Experience with Infrastructure as Code such as Terraform, CDK, or Pulumi.
Experience with Kubernetes and microservices architecture.
Experience in devtooling, cloud infrastructure, or developer-focused product environments.
