Role Overview

The Silicon Engineer position at Anthropic in San Francisco is an exciting opportunity to join a growing custom silicon team and help build foundational hardware for massive AI training and inference workloads. This role is well-suited for an autonomous, experienced engineer who has previously shipped silicon and enjoys working across multiple hardware domains. Operating with high independence, the selected candidate will play a critical part in shaping the future of safe and beneficial AI systems from the chip level up.

Key Responsibilities

Take part in end-to-end activities for the program, spanning strategy, specification, execution, and establishing the technical bar.
Write specifications and interface definitions that others design against, maintaining coherence as the architecture converges.
Make and own directional calls regarding technology and IP selection, build versus buy versus license decisions, and design authority.
Build and share AI-assisted approaches to code-like tasks, helping the team understand where tools like Claude accelerate workflows.
Contribute to architecture and micro-architecture discussions from a domain-specific perspective, addressing tradeoffs that impact the rest of the chip.
Partner closely with inference, performance, kernels, infrastructure, and hardware systems teams on co-design, bring-up, and integration.

Requirements

Deep, hands-on expertise in at least one silicon domain such as front-end design, pre-silicon verification, physical design, design for test, analog and mixed-signal, foundry, design infrastructure, or packaging and signal integrity.
Direct personal contribution to silicon that has successfully taped out and shipped, with detailed ownership.
Working fluency in adjacent domains to reason about chip-level tradeoffs outside of one's specialty.
Experience collaborating with external partners including ASIC houses, IP vendors, foundries, or test partners.
A proven track record of owning directional technical decisions and understanding their consequences.
Practical experience using AI coding tools in a professional capacity alongside clear ideas on their effectiveness.
Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to drive alignment across organizations.

Nice to Have

Experience working on machine learning accelerators, high-performance compute, or other large, high-bandwidth designs.
Background on a founding or early-stage silicon team, including standing up flows, methodology, or tooling from scratch.
Familiarity with the chip-package-system interface, hardware-software co-design, and memory subsystems or on-die interconnect.
Experience building or extending AI-assisted design, verification, or physical design flows.
