This high-impact role sets the technical direction and architecture for the systems that distribute AI capabilities to developers and enterprises globally.

Role Overview

As the senior-most individual contributor across API Engineering, this position operates at the intersection of technical strategy and execution. The professional in this role will drive multi-year strategies across several sub-teams, including API Core, API Capabilities, API Knowledge, API Distributability, and API Agents. Ideal candidates have a passion for building reliable, scalable distributed systems and possess strong product instincts regarding API design. This opportunity is well-suited for a seasoned technical leader who enjoys leading through influence and collaborating closely with research, infrastructure, and product teams.

Key Responsibilities

Define and execute a multi-year technical strategy for the Claude API across core, capabilities, knowledge, distributability, and agentic workflows.
Personally lead the highest-complexity, highest-impact engineering initiatives spanning multiple organizational boundaries.
Act as the primary technical decision-maker for architectural choices with organization-wide scope.
Collaborate with Research, Inference, Platform, Infrastructure, and Safeguards teams to ensure secure, reliable, and scalable delivery of frontier model capabilities.
Mentor and foster the growth of Staff-level engineers throughout the organization.
Align cross-functional stakeholders across Product, Go-To-Market, and Safety while proactively addressing technical risks.

Requirements

Bring 12 or more years of professional engineering experience, featuring a clear track record operating at a Staff or Senior Staff level.
Demonstrated success shaping technical strategy for large-scale distributed systems or API platforms.
Deep expertise in distributed systems architecture, with hands-on proficiency writing design docs, defining architectures, and coding in critical paths.
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Availability to work under a location-based hybrid policy requiring at least 25% time in the San Francisco or New York offices.
