The Senior/Staff Forward Deployed Engineer for Synthetic Data Generation at Snorkel AI is a full-time hybrid position based in New York City, NY or San Francisco, CA. This role suits an experienced machine learning and AI professional eager to lead critical customer engagements focused on synthetic data workflows, evaluation, and model training performance.

Key Responsibilities

Design and build scalable synthetic data generation, transformation, filtering, and evaluation pipelines for advanced AI use cases.
Translate model objectives, failure modes, and data gaps into actionable synthetic data strategies and technical specifications.
Develop LLM- and ML-assisted workflows to produce high-quality training and evaluation datasets across targeted domains and edge cases.
Build automated evaluators, quality checks, and measurement frameworks to assess correctness, relevance, diversity, and coverage.
Design and execute experiments to measure the impact of synthetic data on downstream model performance and iterate on generation approaches.
Package and deliver production-grade datasets with standardized formats, quality assurance, and thorough documentation.
Lead technical workstreams from initial solution design through production delivery, addressing customer needs and incorporating feedback.
Rapidly prototype and operationalize solutions across models, data pipelines, APIs, and custom applications.
Identify recurring patterns across customer engagements to turn successful solutions into reusable pipelines, evaluators, and technical standards.
Partner with DaaS Engineering and Product teams to influence platform capabilities based on real-world customer insights.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in machine learning engineering, data science, applied AI, forward deployed engineering, or a closely related technical field.
Strong programming skills in Python with a proven track record of building reliable production data or machine learning systems.
Experience containerizing applications using Docker and deploying systems on major cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
Hands-on expertise working with large language models, building model-based applications, and integrating data sources through APIs.
Strong understanding of machine learning experimentation, metric definition, and evaluation techniques including LLM-as-a-judge or rubric-based assessment.
Demonstrated ability to navigate ambiguous technical problems, drive architecture decisions, and communicate effectively with technical and cross-functional stakeholders.
Experience serving as a technical lead, setting technical direction, and mentoring other engineers.

Nice to Have

Experience developing datasets specifically for fine-tuning, preference optimization, or benchmarking, including human-in-the-loop workflows.
Background in building agentic environments, tasks, tool-agent-user interaction design, and agent tool protocols.
Familiarity with reinforcement learning for LLMs, reward and verifier design, and reinforcement learning with verifiable rewards.
Experience thriving in fast-paced, customer-facing environments with rapidly evolving requirements.
