Senior Software Engineer, Rust
About this role
Complex defense software often struggles to process noisy, ambiguous sensor data in real time, a challenge this hire will solve by building advanced tracking and estimation systems. Working within small, innovative teams at Anduril Industries, the incoming engineer will architect high-performance Rust software, prototype probabilistic reasoning algorithms, and evolve production-grade codebases that power the Lattice OS ecosystem. The ideal candidate brings extensive software architecture experience, a strong foundation in applied mathematics, and a drive to deploy mission-critical solutions that directly impact military capabilities.
Operating primarily out of Waltham, Massachusetts, this role involves close collaboration with diverse stakeholders to translate technical progress into actionable situational awareness. Professionals who thrive in iterative development environments and enjoy tackling complex problems in target tracking and state estimation will find this position well-suited to their background.
What you will do
- Define and guide the technical direction of a small engineering team while leveraging subject-matter expertise in target tracking and state estimation.
- Architect, maintain, and evolve complex software systems by refactoring existing codebases to enhance performance, scalability, and maintainability.
- Prototype and deploy state-of-the-art algorithms for multi-sensor data fusion, state estimation, and tracking within agile development cycles.
- Develop high-performance Rust software for real-time systems ranging from tactical implementations to decision support and simulation tools.
- Design and implement robust filters, estimators, and probabilistic reasoning systems to extract actionable insights from ambiguous sensor data.
- Analyze system performance using rigorous statistical techniques, high-fidelity simulations, and modeling tools to validate technology benefits.
- Drive customer success by customizing algorithms and software for mission-critical use cases involving real-time tracking and sensor fusion.
What you need
- Possess at least 8 years of professional software engineering experience alongside a Bachelor's degree in mathematics, physics, engineering, or another technical field.
- Demonstrate experience managing and evolving software architecture in production environments, including refactoring legacy systems and handling technical debt.
- Show a minimum of 2 years working on a single codebase or product, maintaining and expanding it as requirements changed over time.
- Exhibit a strong understanding of software design patterns, architectural principles, and best practices for building scalable systems beyond basic syntax.
- Display proficiency in algorithm design, software development, and statistical modeling, with specific experience using Rust and Python.
- Maintain a solid understanding of applied mathematics, including linear algebra, optimization, probability, and stochastic processes.
- Be eligible to obtain and maintain an active U.S. Secret security clearance.
Nice to have
- Experience refactoring and modernizing Rust codebases in production environments
- Contributions to open-source Rust projects or the broader Rust ecosystem
- Experience with concurrent and parallel programming patterns in Rust
- Background in machine learning as applied to target tracking and recognition
- Knowledge of signal processing techniques for interpreting radar, lidar, or EO/IR sensor data
Benefits
- Highly competitive equity grants included in the majority of full-time offers
- Top-tier benefits designed to support health, recovery, and future planning
