Role Overview

Coursera seeks a Senior Software Engineer for an innovation team building and deploying AI-powered solutions with enterprise and campus customers. The position involves working at the intersection of AI, data engineering, cloud architecture, and customer solutioning. Responsibilities span the entire engagement lifecycle, from scoping customer environments to prototyping solutions and hardening them into production deployments. Regular domestic and occasional international travel is required for discovery, prototyping, and go-live phases.

Key Responsibilities

Scope customer environments directly with executive sponsors and IT or data owners to map systems, data models, and workflows.
Rapidly prototype and demo working solutions in front of customers to prove value quickly.
Serve as the bridge between the customer and the core engineering team to transition validated prototypes into production deployments.
Design and implement multi-tenant, hybrid, or customer-controlled deployment architectures meeting data residency, privacy, and IT requirements.
Own identity and access management, encryption, and secure cross-network connectivity such as mTLS, VPC peering, PrivateLink, and API gateways.
Apply security, data-residency, and compliance judgment during discovery conversations prior to commercial commitments.
Manage CI/CD, observability, and production support for systems operating inside customer environments.
Identify repeatable patterns across customer engagements and share field insights with Product teams.
Collaborate with Product Managers, AI Specialists, and Program Managers to define problem statements focused on impact.
Travel regularly to customer sites for scoping, prototyping, and go-live phases, including workshops and executive readouts.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of experience in a software engineering role with strong backend engineering and cloud infrastructure background.
At least 1 year of experience building production-grade agentic AI solutions.
Proficiency in backend languages such as Python, Java, and TypeScript, alongside technologies like Docker, Kubernetes, and Kafka.
Deep understanding of cloud platforms, with AWS preferred, for multi-tenant and hybrid deployment models.
Strong data engineering fundamentals covering ingestion, cleaning, and normalization of disparate customer data.
Working knowledge of identity and access management, encryption, key management, and secure network patterns.
Comfort operating directly with customers to scope ambiguous problems, run discovery, and demo work-in-progress solutions live.
Willingness and ability to travel regularly to customer sites domestically and occasionally internationally.
Experience leading projects and debugging complex issues with minimal supervision.

Nice to Have

Experience with modern agentic AI tooling including LangChain, LangGraph, FastMCP, RAG, or MCP.
Experience with Postgres, DuckDB, pgvector, or similar analytical and transactional data layers.
Prior experience in solutions engineering, professional services, or technical consulting roles.
Familiarity with data privacy and residency regimes like GDPR, FERPA, DPDPA, and HIPAA.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment and make technical trade-offs with limited guidance.
Communication skills to translate technical constraints for executive sponsors and non-technical stakeholders.
