About this role

Scaling automated manufacturing systems at a national level requires bridging the gap between advanced computer vision and industrial factory environments. Anduril Industries seeks a Senior Machine Vision Engineer to design, integrate, and deploy vision systems that handle quality inspection, defect detection, and process monitoring across company factories.

Working within the Manufacturing Automation team, the engineer defines production automation for the defense technology sector. Responsibilities include specifying industrial hardware, overseeing system installation, leading technical projects, and driving Root Cause Corrective Action investigations for vision failures. The person in this role collaborates cross-functionally and mentors junior team members to elevate technical capabilities.

An ideal candidate possesses extensive hands-on experience building machine vision systems in manufacturing environments alongside deep knowledge of industrial optics and automation integration. Familiarity with hardware ecosystems, computer vision frameworks, and industrial controls ensures success in shaping national-scale defense manufacturing.

What you will do

  • Design and implement machine vision systems for industrial automation, quality inspection, defect detection, and process monitoring.
  • Specify, procure, validate, and sustain core vision components including cameras, lenses, lighting, controllers, and software.
  • Oversee the installation, validation, and commissioning of vision systems across multiple production lines.
  • Lead technical projects, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate cross-functionally to integrate high-precision inspection systems.
  • Drive Root Cause Corrective Action investigations for vision system errors and process failures.
  • Train production staff in daily operation, troubleshooting, and maintenance of vision equipment to elevate team technical capabilities.

What you need

  • Hold a Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, Robotics, or a related discipline.
  • Bring 5+ years of hands-on industry experience building, deploying, and maintaining machine vision systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrate direct experience with industrial hardware ecosystems like Cognex, Keyence, Basler, or Sick.
  • Show proficiency with core vision and deep learning software including OpenCV, Halcon, PyTorch, or TensorFlow.
  • Possess strong coding skills in Python, C#, or C++.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of camera selection, lens optics, resolution, lighting techniques, and sensor calibration.
  • Have direct experience interfacing vision systems with industrial controls like PLCs and robotics.
  • Demonstrate mastery of classical rules-based tools, advanced defect detection, AI-based vision, and SPC methodologies.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Industry 4.0 standards, factory automation software, and IIoT protocols such as IO-Link, MQTT or OPC UA
  • Familiarity with modern development workflows, including Git version control and CI/CD pipelines
  • Experience with 3D imaging techniques like structured light, time-of-flight, or stereo vision for robotic guidance and inspection
  • Possession of an active Secret or Top-Secret security clearance

Benefits

  • Comprehensive, competitive benefits package available at little to no cost to employees
  • Highly competitive equity grants included in the majority of full-time offers
