Role Overview

Instructure is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to design and own the learner models that support mastery and progression features. Based in Budapest with hybrid remote flexibility, this full-time position within the Research and Development department suits an experienced machine learning professional looking to shape educational technology. Candidates are required to work onsite on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, with Thursdays strongly encouraged.

Key Responsibilities

Design and construct learner models, incorporating longitudinal and knowledge tracing methods to power progression features for students and educators.
Establish the data foundation for learner modeling by determining critical signals and constructing required datasets.
Partner with learning scientists and product teams to convert mastery definitions into model targets and evaluation metrics.
Develop scoring and estimation methods capable of processing sparse, noisy, and changing behavioral data.
Take full ownership of production models, managing training, scoring pipelines, versioning, testing, and live quality monitoring.
Communicate model performance, limitations, and assumptions clearly to engineering, product, and learning partners.

Requirements

Six or more years of professional experience in applied machine learning, applied research, or machine learning engineering, including accountability for models deployed in actual products.
Deep specialization in at least one of the following areas applied to time-evolving data: latent-variable or probabilistic modeling, sequence modeling, temporal modeling, Bayesian methods, or output calibration.
Advanced Python capabilities and production engineering expertise, with a history of shipping scheduled and predictive models for real users.
Strong evaluation judgment covering calibration, stability, uncertainty, interpretability, fairness, and validation strategy.

Nice to Have

Background in user-state modeling, personalization at scale, or recommender systems.
Familiarity with psychometrics, educational measurement, knowledge tracing, or adaptive learning platforms.
Experience merging learner models with structured knowledge representations like concept graphs, standards, or skills.
Practice in designing observational validation strategies or experiments to verify model accuracy against reality.
