Role Overview
Pennylane is seeking a Senior Machine Learning Engineer - Embedded AI to join the team in All France on a remote basis. This role suits an experienced engineer who wants to turn complex accounting problems into trusted machine learning products used daily by entrepreneurs and accountants.
Key Responsibilities
Design and ship machine learning systems for document understanding, extraction, classification, matching, ranking, scoring, and recommendations.
Contribute directly to Copilot and Autopilot experiences, including Bookkeeping Autopilot and Revision Autopilot.
Own the entire lifecycle of solutions from problem framing, data and labeling strategy, baselines, training, evaluation, deployment, experimentation, monitoring, and maintenance.
Transform user corrections and production failures into improved datasets, models, and product behaviors.
Define quality metrics reflecting real user value, such as precision and recall, automation coverage, straight-through processing, human correction rate, latency, and cost.
Partner closely with Product, Engineering, and accounting experts to understand workflows, define correctness, and integrate machine learning naturally into user experiences.
Choose the simplest reliable approach for each problem, spanning deterministic logic, classical machine learning, deep learning, or generative AI.
Help improve shared machine learning engineering practices, encompassing reusable components, experimentation, observability, data quality, and reliable training and inference pipelines.
Monitor emerging machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques, including multimodal and generative models, applying them for measurable value.
Requirements
Possess 5 to 8 years of professional experience with strong proficiency in Python.
Bring hands-on experience building and operating machine learning systems at scale in production environments.
Know how to frame ambiguous product problems, establish baselines, and select useful metrics prior to model optimization.
Demonstrate strong experience in several areas including document AI, natural language processing, classification, ranking, recommendation, anomaly detection, deep learning, or generative AI.
Prioritize data quality, observability, failure modes, cost, and long-term maintainability alongside model performance.
Display a balanced blend of technical, business, and product skills with strong communication abilities across engineering, product, and non-technical domains.
Demonstrate fluency in English, with French being optional.
Nice to Have
Experience with accounting, fintech, or other high-trust business workflows.
Experience working with human-in-the-loop systems, active learning, or learning from user corrections.
Experience running machine learning systems at scale under strict latency, reliability, or cost constraints.
Familiarity with multimodal or generative models designed for document understanding.
