Role Overview

Sierra Studio is managing the hiring process for a technology startup that builds AI solutions for in-home care. The company needs its first in-house engineer to write production and prototype code, conduct R&D experiments, and serve as the main technical reference for the CEO. Most of the week involves hands-on coding, technical validation, and hardware-adjacent testing. Over time, the role will evolve into technical leadership to hire and manage additional engineers.

Key Responsibilities

Build production and prototype code across the stack, stand up MVPs rapidly, and create internal tools and lightweight automation.
Take open technical questions regarding new models, hardware, or components and turn them into working evidence through end-to-end experiments.
Engage in hands-on robotics work, including testing with physical humanoid robots on site.
Evaluate build, buy, and integrate choices and defend the final decisions.
Act as the technical voice in the room by answering day-to-day questions from the CEO, providing honest feasibility reads, and supporting technical narratives for funding rounds.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of professional software building experience with a history of shipping usable products.
Strong hands-on programming skills with comfort across the stack.
Practical fluency in AI and machine learning, including building with LLMs, speech, or perception systems.
Background in taking a product from zero to a working first version under incomplete information.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills to bridge technical and business contexts.
Strong autonomy, testing, and QA discipline to validate AI and hardware features.
Authorization to work in the US without visa sponsorship and ability to work on-site in Culver City, CA.

Nice to Have

Experience with robotics, humanoids, embodied AI, IoT, or connected devices.
Familiarity with hardware-adjacent work like edge deployment, audio pipelines, sensors, and on-device inference.
Background working with distributed engineering teams.
Experience in early-stage startups doing it all before a team forms.
Product instinct and a technical discipline background or equivalent self-taught depth.
