About this role

Keeping deployed robotic systems reliably operational requires an engineer who can manage the boundary where custom hardware meets software, preventing firmware regressions that demand physical field service. The DeviceOS team at Anduril Industries builds the unified operating system and hardware-enablement platform powering autonomous assets like aerial systems and Sentry Towers. This role focuses on owning the boot sequence from firmware through encrypted root filesystems, customizing vendor BSPs, and guaranteeing deterministic hardware availability across diverse peripherals.

Candidates joining this team will debug boot failures, write platform drivers, and maintain a large deployed fleet by resolving issues in existing hardware and boot chains. Successful engineers bring deep embedded Linux expertise, strong C programming skills, and a practical approach to diagnosing board-level issues using schematics and serial consoles.

What you will do

  • Manage the complete boot sequence on deployed compute, covering low-level firmware, U-Boot or UEFI, unified kernel images, initrd, encrypted storage unlock, and handoff to a running NixOS environment.
  • Reconcile vendor BSPs with modern NixOS package sets, producing kernel and device tree patches when custom behavior is necessary.
  • Ensure all peripherals, such as cameras, radars, motor controllers, CAN networks, and radios, operate reliably and enumerate correctly across platform upgrades.
  • Triage and remediate CVEs in vendor kernels and low-level system components on systems already deployed in the field.
  • Build and maintain automated Hardware-in-the-Loop test suites to catch regressions in power states and platform stability before code reaches physical hardware.
  • Diagnose intermittent bus errors, thermal throttling, kernel panics, and boot hangs using serial consoles, logic analyzers, and hardware schematics.

What you need

  • Four or more years of professional embedded Linux platform, sustainment of deployed embedded Linux platforms, or kernel-adjacent integration experience.
  • Deep understanding of the embedded Linux boot chain, including bootloaders, device trees, kernel command line, initrd, and root filesystem assembly.
  • Strong programming skills in C for kernel and driver development alongside proficiency in Rust or C++ for userspace platform integration.
  • Hands-on experience debugging hardware at the bench using serial consoles, component datasheets, and schematics.
  • Experience maintaining software deployed on real-world hardware where updates must be safe and validated against regressions.
  • U.S. Person status due to export control regulations with eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

Nice to have

  • Direct experience with declarative systems like Nix or NixOS for embedded builds, or deep expertise in Yocto or Buildroot.
  • Hands-on experience with JetPack, Jetson Linux BSP, Tegra boot architecture, or CUDA compute runtime integration.
  • Practical implementation of hardware root-of-trust, secure boot, HAB, AHAB, or measured boot.
  • Experience architecting automated test benches using Python or Bash to validate embedded Linux builds against physical targets.
  • Upstream open-source contributions to the Linux kernel, U-Boot, or system-level open-source projects.

Questions candidates ask

What is the salary range for this position?

The salary range for this role is an estimate based on a wide range of compensation factors, inclusive of base salary only, spanning from $191,000 to $253,000 USD. Highly competitive equity grants are included in the majority of full-time offers and are considered part of the total compensation package.

What are the citizenship or work authorization requirements?

U.S. Person status is required due to export control regulations under ITAR and EAR. Candidates must also have eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. security clearance.

What kind of hardware and systems will I be working with?

Underneath airframes and Sentry Towers are custom carrier boards, embedded ARM architectures, and NVIDIA Jetson modules integrated with electro-optical and infrared cameras, radars, CAN-connected sensor nodes, GPS, flight controllers, radios, and high-power motor drivers.

What does the engineering ownership entail regarding the boot path?

You will own the boot sequence end-to-end on deployed compute, which includes low-level firmware, U-Boot or UEFI, unified kernel images, initrd, encrypted storage unlock, and handoff to a running NixOS environment.
