About this role

Engineers who thrive on solving messy, real-world problems at scale will find a strong fit building backend services for connected devices in an AI-native environment. Life360 operates a remote-first organization with over 500 employees, powering a household-name membership platform serving millions of active users worldwide.

The Vertical Experiences team builds consumer product layers that bring pets into the family, handling lost pet alerts, activity timelines, and care coordination. Backend engineers in this group design cloud services that ingest telemetry, manage device state, and process high-throughput streams. Development workflows are redesigned around AI as a first-class collaborator for spec writing, code generation, and test authoring, allowing the team to ship features weekly.

What you will do

  • Design, build, and maintain backend services that support device connectivity, telemetry ingest, health monitoring, and command and control operations.
  • Collaborate closely with firmware, mobile, and product teams to define robust APIs and workflows for device features.
  • Deliver scalable, resilient systems inside a microservices environment running on AWS infrastructure.
  • Build and own data pipelines for high-throughput streams using Kafka or similar streaming technologies.
  • Instrument services for observability, reliability, and service-level objective compliance while participating in on-call rotations.
  • Orchestrate AI coding agents daily for spec writing, code generation, test authoring, incident triage, and pull request reviews.

What you need

  • Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or possess equivalent practical experience.
  • Bring five or more years of experience building backend services in languages like Java, Go, or Python.
  • Demonstrate hands-on experience with microservices architecture, RESTful API design, and distributed systems.
  • Show strong competency with cloud infrastructure, container orchestration, and deployments.
  • Possess working experience with relational or NoSQL databases, caching layers, and event streaming systems.
  • Display hands-on agentic AI workflow experience alongside the ability to collaborate across teams and articulate technical tradeoffs.

Nice to have

  • Experience with IoT or telematics systems
  • Familiarity with Kafka, Kinesis, or other streaming platforms
  • Experience with high-frequency ingest systems and time-series data
  • A background with observability tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry
  • Knowledge of SRE practices and automated testing frameworks

Benefits

  • Competitive pay and benefits including medical, dental, vision, life, and disability insurance plans
  • Paid parental leave
  • 401(k) plan with company matching program in the US and RRSP with DPSP plan for Canadian employees
  • Mental Wellness Program and EAP
  • Flexible PTO and 12 company-wide days off throughout the year
  • Free Life360 Platinum Membership for your preferred circle and free Tile Products
