This role suits an experienced engineer who values real ownership and wants to build reliable AI platforms for financial operations in Portugal. The Senior Applied AI Engineer joins the AI Platform team at bunch to scale and maintain production-ready artificial intelligence systems.

Role Overview

The Senior Applied AI Engineer will transition AI capabilities at bunch from experimental stages to trusted, relied-upon production systems. Located in Portugal, the position involves end-to-end product engineering including architecture, evaluation, integration, and deployment within fund operations.

Key Responsibilities

Build and ship automated agents for real fund-operations workflows from prototype to production, integrating them directly with internal services, data models, and authorization systems.
Evaluate and improve agent performance by building evaluation layers, CI regression suites, and human review processes to optimize accuracy, latency, and cost.
Own the AI application architecture covering orchestration, multi-agent design, tool contracts, memory, and context engineering with clear domain boundaries and safety guardrails.
Run systems in production with versioned, feature-flagged rollouts, multi-provider fallback, regional failover within EU data residency, and trace-based observability.
Establish platform standards, consolidate document parsing, and mentor engineers across teams on agent and LLM practices.

Requirements

Minimum of 5 years of software building experience, including at least one production-grade agent or LLM capability owned end-to-end.
Depth in orchestration and context engineering using tools such as Mastra, ai-sdk, LangGraph, or similar frameworks.
Demonstrated ability to make non-deterministic systems measurable through test cases, regression suites, and human review.
Experience reading traces, diagnosing failure modes, tuning cost and latency, and managing provider rate limits.
Backend programming experience using TypeScript and/or Python.
A platform mindset focused on building scalable standards for other engineers.

Nice to Have

Experience in fintech, private markets, or other regulated, document-heavy domains.
Experience working under EU data-residency constraints.
