Role Overview

Tools for Humanity is looking for a Senior Software Development Engineer to join as one of the initial device software team members at the San Francisco office. This position focuses on full-stack development for next-generation proof-of-human devices, operating within a rapidly growing and cross-functional environment.

Key Responsibilities

Design, implement, and maintain embedded Linux and Android system components, including system daemons, init scripts, and kernel modules.
Develop and extend AOSP along with custom HALs to support novel platform services and hardware features.
Define robust communication interfaces across various system components.
Oversee the complete software development lifecycle from initial concept through production, emphasizing scalable systems.
Act as a primary bridge between firmware and hardware teams and Android application engineering groups.
Collaborate cross-functionally with product, hardware, and software peers to optimize system performance while keeping user experience in focus.
Support overseas development efforts alongside JDM and ODM partners.
Integrate and optimize low-level middleware and drivers for improved reliability, performance, and power efficiency.
Mentor junior engineering staff in software development best practices.

Requirements

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Minimum of 7 years of practical software development experience with deep knowledge spanning the software stack.
Proven background working with Android and AOSP-based platforms.
Track record of developing and maintaining consumer electronics systems on a large scale.
Strong coding proficiency in C, C++, and Rust, alongside proficiency in Linux kernel and user-space programming.
Experience shipping high-volume, mobile Android-based devices.
Comprehensive understanding of AOSP internals, Android system bring-up, and the HAL framework.
Experience building custom HALs and IPC interfaces such as Binder, HIDL, or AIDL.
Familiarity utilizing cross-compilation toolchains, hardware abstraction layers, and device trees.
Ability to thrive in a high-velocity, startup setting with a proactive and hands-on mentality.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with build systems like Android build systems, Yocto, or Buildroot.
Hands-on background working with BSP development, embedded Linux, and system integration.
