Role Overview

Zip Co Limited seeks a Senior AI Engineer to join the engineering team within the AI Platforms division. The position focuses on shaping the decision and orchestration layers that power both customer-facing products like Zia and internal automated workflows. The candidate will design reliable mechanisms that determine when agents should leverage deterministic logic, retrieval systems, models, or tool calls.

Key Responsibilities

Build and maintain intelligent decision, routing, and intent classification systems that handle ambiguous requests and manage escalation flows.
Benchmark and select models based on performance metrics such as task success, safety, latency, and total inference cost.
Implement model orchestration components including adapters, routing logic, structured outputs, retries, and fallback mechanisms.
Connect agents securely to approved APIs and tools while enforcing proper authentication, authorization, and idempotency.
Collaborate with security and risk teams to defend against prompt injections and handle sensitive data securely.
Create reusable platform capabilities that help domain engineering teams develop reliable AI-powered features.
Utilize AI-assisted development tools to accelerate workflows while applying strict engineering judgment to code quality and testing.

Requirements

Educational background requiring either a Bachelor's degree with 10 years of related experience, a Master's degree with 6 years, a PhD with 3 years, or equivalent experience.
Minimum of 10 years of professional software engineering experience building and operating production software, including deployed AI or ML applications.
Strong proficiency in Python or TypeScript with a focus on modern software engineering practices, API design, and distributed services.
Practical background in LLM tool calling, structured outputs, retrieval-augmented generation, and workflow orchestration.
Hands-on experience evaluating model performance, classification quality, and failure strategies.

Nice to Have

Familiarity with Google Cloud, Google ADK, Model Garden, or managed AI platforms.
Experience with semantic routing, open-weight models, Model Context Protocol, and agent-development frameworks.
Background in payments, fintech, or environments requiring high auditability and strict access controls.
