Sanctions Compliance Lead
About this role
Taking day-to-day leadership of the sanctions compliance program involves setting strategy, governing screening controls, and directing regulator-facing matters as a senior leader within the Integrity & Compliance function. Operating in a domain where rules for AI models and compute evolve rapidly, this position requires building durable frameworks that allow the organization to scale responsibly across globally accessible APIs and downstream channels. A successful candidate acts as a builder who exercises independent judgment without clear precedent and partners closely with legal, product, and business teams to address complex trade controls.
The Integrity & Compliance team operates within a growing AI lab focused on reliable, interpretable, and steerable systems. This specific role exists to manage economic sanctions exposure, support export controls oversight, and advise stakeholders on commercial and geographic expansion. Individuals who thrive here possess deep trade compliance expertise, a collaborative leadership style, and the capability to make risk-based decisions in a fast-paced environment.
What you will do
- Lead the economic sanctions compliance program end to end by defining strategy, risk appetite, policy frameworks, and roadmaps.
- Manage regulator-facing matters including voluntary self-disclosures, blocking and reject reports, and licensing questions in partnership with legal counsel.
- Govern restricted-party screening and enforcement controls by overseeing list configuration, match thresholds, escalation criteria, and vendor management.
- Advise business and product teams on the trade controls implications of commercial expansion, new channels, partnerships, and acquisitions.
- Support oversight of the export controls program by collaborating with compliance officers and trade compliance counsel on priorities and reporting.
- Prepare and deliver comprehensive program reporting on health, key risks, and emerging issues to executive leadership and the Audit Committee.
- Mentor compliance team members and help shape the organizational structure of the function as it grows.
What you need
- Demonstrate substantive, hands-on experience leading an economic sanctions compliance program under OFAC, EU, UK, and other applicable regimes within a commercial environment.
- Possess direct experience managing voluntary self-disclosures, blocking or reject reports, and regulatory filings end to end.
- Show a proven track record of assessing ongoing sanctions risk, owning remediation efforts, and delivering program enhancements through to closure.
- Have experience governing restricted-party screening programs including list scope, match thresholds, and vendor management.
- Display a history of reporting on program health and risk to senior leadership, audit committees, or boards while driving risk appetite decisions.
- Bring working knowledge of US export controls, including EAR and BIS rules, sufficient to oversee the export controls program.
- Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders and outside counsel to translate trade requirements into practical guidance for product and engineering teams.
