About this role

Agility Robotics is building a new era of automation by deploying commercially available humanoid robots in environments like warehouses and manufacturing facilities. These robots are designed to perform physically demanding and repetitive tasks, allowing human workers to concentrate on higher-value activities. The company emphasizes industry-leading safety standards and leverages proven deployment data to enhance human potential through automation.

This Robotics Software Engineer role is crucial for the Skills team, focusing on the development, testing, validation, and integration of robot skills directly into customer workflows. The engineer will operate at the intersection of prototyping and production, working closely with the humanoid robot to evaluate performance and resolve issues. The core function involves bringing new customer workflows online and ensuring the reliability of existing deployments.

This position is ideal for someone who is hands-on with hardware, enjoys iterating on physical robot behaviors, and is driven to ensure the reliability of their work. Candidates who possess a curiosity about end-to-end autonomous robot systems, from low-level control to high-level planning, and a strong sense of ownership would thrive in this environment.

What you will do

  • Develop and maintain the core library of production-ready skills that serve as the foundation for customer workflows.
  • Script new skills utilizing behavior trees, state machines, or task planners to define control flow logic and behavior sequencing.
  • Implement classical and modern robotics paradigms to execute robot skills for various tasks in target domains.
  • Build and maintain workflows by interacting with the robot’s skill API.
  • Prototype novel skills and customer use cases to assess their technical feasibility.
  • Define what constitutes a 'production-ready' skill or workflow and design the necessary test plans and infrastructure for validation.
  • Recreate failure cases from logs into repeatable tests to ensure robustness.
  • Validate new skills and workflows in both simulation environments and on physical hardware prior to release.

What you need

  • Possesses at least two years of relevant experience, encompassing both research-level and industry application, preferably in mobile manipulation robots.
  • Requires a Bachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in Robotics, Computer Science, or a closely related field.
  • Must be proficient in Python and capable of writing clean, maintainable code.
  • Demonstrates experience working within Linux operating systems.
  • The candidate must be enthusiastic about developing physical robot behaviors rather than focusing solely on simulations.
  • Should enjoy hands-on work, iterating on hardware, and observing their contributions in field deployments.
  • Needs a strong sense of ownership and a commitment to ensuring the reliability of their developed features.
  • Must possess a detailed focus on eliminating potential failure modes.

Nice to have

  • Prior experience scripting robot behaviors using state machines or behavior trees.
  • Understanding of robot manipulation, motion planning, and kinematics (e.g., familiarity with MoveIt framework).
  • Exposure to test-driven development and automated regression testing.
  • Experience operating autonomous robots in customer environments or real-world deployments.

Benefits

  • 401(k) Plan with a 6% company match
  • Equity: Company stock options
  • 100% company-paid medical, dental, vision, and short/long-term disability insurance
  • Employee Assistance Program (EAP)
