Together AI's Model Shaping team focuses on tailoring open foundation models to specific downstream applications through advanced post-training, efficient training systems, and robust evaluation methods. Interns tackle complex problems across supervised learning, preference optimization, and reinforcement learning, with previous cohorts successfully publishing their findings at top-tier venues like ICML and ICLR.
The team builds services that empower machine learning developers to select, adapt, and own frontier-level specialized models using domain-specific data. Participants in this program will design rigorous experiments, implement novel algorithms, and integrate their research directly into production products. Success in this role requires a deep curiosity for deep learning fundamentals and a drive to turn theoretical ideas into practical, high-impact technologies.
What you will do
- Research and implement novel techniques across supervised learning, preference optimization, reinforcement learning, or efficient neural network training.
- Design and conduct rigorous experiments to validate research hypotheses and evaluate foundation model capabilities.
- Document findings thoroughly through scientific publications and blog posts.
- Integrate successful research results directly into Together AI products and services.
What you need
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or Ph.D. degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of machine learning and deep learning fundamentals.
- Bring practical experience with deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch or JAX.
- Maintain familiarity with the Transformer architecture and recent developments in foundation models.
Nice to have
- Prior research experience with training foundation models or efficient machine learning
- Publications at leading ML and NLP conferences including NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, or EMNLP
- Understanding of model optimization techniques and hardware acceleration approaches
- Contributions to open-source machine learning projects

What is the compensation for this role?
The estimated US hourly rate for this role is $58 to $70. Compensation is determined by location, level, role, experience, skills, and job-related knowledge.
