About this role

Anthropic is currently seeking a Research Engineer or Research Scientist for the Tokens team to build advanced large-scale machine learning systems from the ground up. Role Overview

As a Research Engineer on the Tokens team, professionals touch all aspects of the code and infrastructure at Anthropic. Responsibilities include making compute clusters more reliable for large jobs, improving efficiency and throughput, designing scientific experiments, and enhancing development tooling. Team members write code with a deep understanding of the research context and its broader importance to the organization.

Key Responsibilities

Design and execute scientific experiments related to language modeling and token processing.
Improve cluster reliability, throughput, and system efficiency for massive machine learning workloads.
Build and optimize large-scale distributed training jobs spanning thousands of GPUs.
Create data pipelines, such as formatting datasets for model consumption.
Write design documents outlining fault tolerance strategies and infrastructure improvements.

Requirements

Significant software engineering experience with a results-oriented mindset and a bias toward flexibility and impact.
Willingness to pick up tasks outside the primary job description and enjoy pair programming.
A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field of study or an equivalent combination of education, training, and professional experience.
Ability to work under a location-based hybrid policy, requiring staff to be in one of the designated offices at least 25% of the time.

Nice to Have

Experience building high-performance, large-scale machine learning systems.
Familiarity with GPUs, operating system internals, or large-scale ETL processes.
Background in language modeling with transformers, reinforcement learning, or circuit-based interpretability.
