About this role

The Rack Design Engineer on the Data Center Engineering team is responsible for the end-to-end design of high-density AI compute racks and their associated systems. This role operates at the intersection of mechanical, electrical, optical, and software engineering disciplines, focusing on pushing the limits of thermal, electrical, and optical systems to maximize the efficiency and deployment speed of terrestrial computing. The team is tasked with owning the compute architecture, datacenter network design, and the physical build process for their specialized hardware.

This engineer will be deeply involved in everything from initial concept sketching through to production ramp. Key activities include designing the structure, power delivery, cooling solutions (including liquid cooling), and the physical integration of all components like servers and networking gear. The role exists to ensure that the physical infrastructure of the AI compute clusters is reliable, efficient, and manufacturable at scale.

This position is ideal for an individual who thrives on challenging themselves, possesses a strong work ethic, and excels at prioritizing tasks while maintaining clear communication. Candidates who enjoy being hands-on, taking ownership of a product from design to production, and collaborating across technical domains will find this environment highly suitable.

What you will do

  • The engineer will own the mechanical, structural, and integration design for high-density AI compute racks and related chassis components.
  • This involves integrating compute, networking, power distribution, and liquid cooling into a cohesive, buildable rack architecture.
  • A core duty is designing for the in-house manufacturing line, including developing DFM/DFA, fixtures, work instructions, and inspection processes.
  • The role requires closing complex thermal, structural, and power constraints in collaboration with electrical, optical, and cooling counterparts.
  • The engineer will drive the procurement of necessary parts, ranging from sheet metal to busbars, from concept to qualified production.
  • Responsibilities include physically supporting prototype and production builds to debug fit, airflow, and service times.
  • The role involves producing and maintaining all necessary CAD models, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and build documentation.

What you need

  • A Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a related engineering discipline is required.
  • Candidates must possess at least two years of professional experience designing electromechanical hardware that has been physically built and shipped.
  • Experience owning rack, chassis, or similarly dense electromechanical products through both prototype and production phases is preferred.
  • Fluency in CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, or NX, coupled with the ability to produce released drawings is necessary.
  • Background in ethernet switching, networking interconnects, and high-power distribution is beneficial.
  • Experience taking a rack from New Product Introduction (NPI) onto an in-house manufacturing line, including managing fixtures and cycle time, is highly valued.
  • Proficiency in thermal and structural analysis tools like CFD and FEA to inform design decisions is required.

Nice to have

  • Ownership of rack, chassis, or similarly dense electromechanical products through prototype and production
  • Experience or background in ethernet switching, networking, interconnects, and high power distribution
  • CAD fluency in SolidWorks, Creo, or NX, with released drawings
  • AI / HPC / GPU rack design experience (NVIDIA HGX/GB-class, custom OCP, or equivalent high-power liquid-cooled compute)
  • Liquid cooling design experience (cold plates, manifolds, CDUs, quick disconnects, leak detection, and coolant compatibility)
  • High-power rack electrical integration experience (busbar, PDU, 48V, high-current 3-phase, grounding, and service safety)
  • Cable and fiber physical design inside the rack (MPO/OSFP dress, bend radius, service loops)
  • Experience taking a rack from NPI onto an in-house manufacturing line (fixtures, cycle time, poka-yoke, rework loops)
  • Thermal and structural analysis (CFD, FEA) used to make a design decision
  • Time at a high-velocity hardware organization such as AI/GPU cloud, custom compute, or an OEM/ODM team that owned the product end to end
  • Comfort in a factory or datacenter build environment, including first articles, yield, and hardware debug on the floor

Benefits

  • Must be willing to work extended hours and weekends as needed to support design releases, line bring-up, and cluster deployments.
  • Must be willing to travel to manufacturing and datacenter sites.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. unassisted and work around active factory and datacenter hardware.
