About this role

The Safeguards team at Anthropic builds protections for new AI features enabled by research groups and safeguards new products and surfaces developed by product teams. Operating at the forefront of user protection, the group addresses ethical, technical, and social risks stemming from generative artificial intelligence.

As a Product Manager for Safeguards, the individual chosen will own the ideation, design, development, and deployment of safeguard systems and related product user experiences. Responsibilities include working alongside research and engineering peers to develop detections, evaluations, interventions, and measurement tools across various cloud platforms and surfaces like Claude.ai and external providers.

Ideal candidates bring technical expertise in developing, deploying, and measuring safeguard systems while thriving in ambiguous, fast-moving environments. A deep commitment to making artificial intelligence safe and beneficial for humanity is essential for success in this role.

What you will do

  • Determine how to build in safety by design upstream and leverage downstream defenses for frontier models, AI products, and customers across multiple surfaces.
  • Write safety evaluations and communicate externally about safety topics.
  • Drive impact through ruthless prioritization by clearly defining problems, solution options, and technical tradeoffs.
  • Align and collaborate with policy, enforcement, research, engineering, and cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Understand the AI landscape to plan for mitigation of deployment risks involving increasingly powerful models and determined adversaries.
  • Lead the development of metrics to understand area performance and blindspots to inform future project planning.

What you need

  • Demonstrate technical tradeoff decisions, ideally with experience working across policy experts, AI/ML research engineers, and software engineering teams.
  • Possess a strong user understanding of how products are used and how to provide the best solutions for safeguard concerns.
  • Build product and engineering strategy across multiple cross-functional teams for a rapidly changing space.
  • Design and build metrics to evaluate risks, system performance, and user impact.
  • Navigate and prioritize amidst rapidly changing product specs while flexing into different domains.
  • Plan, build, launch, and measure new products and systems in a zero-to-one environment.
  • Articulate complex technical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences in written and verbal communication.

Nice to have

  • 5+ years in product management focusing on fast problem understanding, roadmaps, data, detection, interventions, infrastructure, and evaluations

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and benefits
  • Optional equity donation matching
  • Generous vacation and parental leave
