Role Overview

Speak is looking for an experienced design professional to improve how product design and engineering teams collaborate by creating a robust, agent-first design system. This role involves establishing semantic layers, component rules, and workflows that empower both human creators and AI agents to make consistent UI decisions. The position operates across mobile-first surfaces like iOS and Android, with expansion to web.

Key Responsibilities

Enhance design and engineering workflows to reduce duplicated decisions, streamline handoffs, and accelerate delivery speeds.
Establish high-quality standards for components and patterns through hands-on prototyping and validation.
Build a scalable semantic layer including component naming conventions and usage guidelines for humans and AI agents.
Drive organization-wide adoption of the design system so it becomes the default workflow.
Manage usage documentation and quality assurance workflows, incorporating AI-assisted checks for accessibility and consistency.
Prioritize highest-leverage component gaps during the initial months and set contribution cadences across teams.

Requirements

Six or more years of professional experience in product design, featuring deep expertise in design systems utilizing tokens, component APIs, and a single source of truth in code.
Proven background in contributing to components, patterns, tokens, governance, and system adoption.
Strong systems thinking orientation, prioritizing foundational infrastructure over isolated feature shipping.
Demonstrated aesthetic judgment with the ability to articulate interface details regarding spacing, motion, and states.
Strong communication skills paired with cross-functional drive to author clear rules and secure broad adoption.
High autonomy, taking initiatives from problem definition through to roadmap, shipping, and adoption.
Familiarity with AI integration in design workflows.
A scale and accessibility mindset supporting multi-platform expansion across mobile and web.

Nice to Have

Practical ability to build or modify components in code using Swift, SwiftUI, Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, or web frameworks.
Experience launching consumer-scale mobile products across multiple international markets and locales.
Track record of creating design systems that engineers actively utilize and that endure over time.
Perspectives on the future of design-to-code and agent-driven workflows.
Background within language learning, education, or cross-cultural product spaces.
