About this role

Role Overview

SecurityScorecard is hiring a Principal Software Architect to lead the system design of our data platform. This hybrid role is based out of the New York City or Austin offices, or available for fully remote work for candidates living outside a 75-mile radius of either location. This position is ideal for an experienced technical leader with a strong background in distributed systems who wants to shape internet-scale data architecture.

Key Responsibilities

Take full ownership of the system design for the data platform, covering everything from ingestion to the serving layer.
Establish clear service boundaries and data contracts between producers and consumers, including compatibility rules and schema ownership.
Design the lakehouse architecture, focusing on open table formats, partitioning strategies, schema evolution, and compaction at scale.
Architect the analytical serving layer to manage conflicting workload demands such as low-latency product queries, internal ad-hoc analytics, and bulk external deliveries.
Embed data quality, observability, validation paths, SLOs, and drift detection directly into the platform rather than adding them later.
Ensure correctness and reproducibility in the ratings pipeline, handling historical restatements and backfills when scoring logic updates.
Produce Technical Design Reviews (TDRs), design documents, and standards to drive architectural direction across teams.
Partner closely with the AI and Front-End Architects to refine data access patterns and mentor senior and staff engineers.

Requirements

10+ years of software or data engineering experience, featuring substantial time architecting large-scale data platforms.
Deep expertise in batch and stream processing at scale utilizing tools like Kafka, Flink, and Spark.
Strong proficiency in Python and PySpark, solid Java capability for Flink stream processing, and enough Scala to read and interpret existing Spark codebases.
Practical experience designing production lakehouse storage, including columnar formats like Parquet and open table formats like Iceberg.
Experience designing OLAP and analytical serving layers using technologies such as ClickHouse, Druid, Pinot, BigQuery, or Snowflake.
Strong understanding of distributed systems fundamentals, including exactly-once versus at-least-once semantics, backpressure, and pipeline failure modes.
Proven track record of building data quality, observability, and contracts as engineered system properties.
Experience leading large-scale data migrations while preserving history and accuracy.
Demonstrated ability to influence teams without formal authority, earning buy-in from skeptical engineers through prototyping and technical credibility.
Excellent technical writing and mentorship skills.

Nice to Have

Experience building data layers underneath machine learning or LLM systems, including feature stores, vector stores, or retrieval pipelines.
Background working with internet-scale telemetry, scan, or observability data, or previous experience in the cybersecurity industry.
A proven history of reducing platform costs at scale through compute right-sizing, query governance, or storage tiering.

Skills and Tools

Python, Java, Scala, C++, TypeScript, Node.js, React
Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, Apache Spark, Snowflake, ClickHouse, Druid, Pinot, BigQuery
AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, Helm, ArgoCD, Iceberg, Parquet

Salary and Benefits

Competitive salary paired with stock options and annual performance-based incentive compensation awards.
Health benefits, unlimited paid time off, parental leave, and tuition reimbursements.
Estimated total compensation range for New York candidates is $270,000 to $330,000 USD (base salary plus bonus).
Estimated total compensation range for Austin candidates is $240,000 to $300,000 USD (base salary plus bonus).
