About this role

ButterflyMX seeks a Principal AI-Native Software Engineer to join its distributed US Remote team on a full-time basis. This role suits an experienced engineer who uses advanced AI development tools to independently take product initiatives from requirements to production-ready software.

Role Overview

ButterflyMX is looking for an exceptional Principal or Staff-level engineer who has fundamentally changed how they build software because of AI. This is not a traditional software engineering role with an AI assistant bolted on. The company wants someone who uses AI agents, especially Claude Code, to independently take well-defined product initiatives from business requirements to secure, tested, production-ready software. The ideal candidate is an excellent backend engineer first, grounded in the core stack and cloud infrastructure across AWS and GCP, using engineering judgment to make AI-generated output valuable.

Key Responsibilities

Partner closely with Product and Design teams to understand business requirements, user outcomes, priorities, constraints, and acceptance criteria.
Take approved product initiatives from business requirements through technical design, implementation, deployment, and ongoing operation.
Use Claude Code as a primary development environment and orchestration layer, running multiple agents or development sessions in parallel.
Automate portions of the product development lifecycle while preserving appropriate human judgment and control.
Review agent-generated code with the judgment expected of a Principal or Staff engineer, rejecting unnecessary complexity and ensuring proper testing.
Work across TypeScript, Node.js, MongoDB, relational databases, and cloud infrastructure across AWS and GCP.

Requirements

Significant experience operating at the Staff, Principal, or equivalent engineering level, with 8+ years of professional software development experience.
A track record of independently delivering complex, production software in partnership with Product and Design teams.
Expert-level experience with Claude Code, with the ability to demonstrate substantial product development using agents in parallel.
Production experience with TypeScript/Node.js, relational databases, and MongoDB.
Hands-on experience deploying and operating production software in a distributed, cloud-based environment across AWS and GCP.
Experience applying AI/ML in production, building retrieval or agentic systems, and managing automated CI/CD pipelines.
