About this role

Role Overview

ButterflyMX is seeking an experienced Firmware Engineer to join the engineering team at the Irvine Office. This hands-on role suits a collaborative professional with a passion for embedded systems and hardware integration who wants to shape the next generation of connected access control products.

Key Responsibilities

Design, write, debug, and maintain production-ready firmware across bare-metal, RTOS/Zephyr, and embedded Linux platforms.
Build reliable low-level firmware in C/C++ for microcontrollers, peripherals, sensors, communication interfaces, and power systems.
Own firmware lifecycles from board bring-up and prototype development through EVT, DVT, PVT, production release, and post-launch support.
Work closely with hardware, reading schematics and PCB layouts, and collaborate with electrical and mechanical engineers on architecture and manufacturability.
Diagnose multi-domain failures using laboratory tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debuggers.
Implement secure boot, bootloaders, chain of trust, signed firmware, and secure OTA updates with rollback protection.
Develop and debug firmware for communication interfaces including I2C, SPI, UART, GPIO, ADC, PWM, RS-485, USB, Ethernet, BLE, Wi-Fi, and cellular systems.
Design firmware with built-in self-test, diagnostics, unit tests, and integration tests to drive quality and reliability.
Utilize AI tools responsibly to accelerate code development and documentation while maintaining rigorous engineering judgment.

Requirements

5+ years of hands-on embedded firmware development experience, with 8+ years preferred for senior candidates.
Strong firmware development skills in C/C++ for resource-constrained embedded systems.
Hands-on experience with bare-metal microcontroller firmware, RTOS-based systems, and embedded Linux, with Zephyr strongly preferred.
Deep understanding of microcontroller architecture, interrupts, timers, DMA, memory maps, bootloaders, watchdogs, peripheral drivers, and low-power modes.
Practical understanding of electronics hardware, including analog and digital domains, power regulation, ADCs, and signal integrity.
Experience debugging real hardware using laboratory equipment such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters.
Experience with secure boot, firmware signing, device identity, key provisioning, and encrypted communications.
Familiarity with higher-level communication patterns like MQTT, REST, WebSockets, and TLS.
Ability to read schematics, understand PCB layouts, and troubleshoot multi-domain failures.
Experience with Git, CI/CD, automated testing, static analysis, and issue tracking.
Strong documentation and communication skills.
Authorized to work in the United States.
