About this role

The day-to-day work for the NLP/LLM Data Scientist involves leveraging Large Language Models (LLMs) and machine learning techniques to perform meaningful data abstraction from complex, unstructured and structured healthcare data. This role is central to building and maintaining AI-ready datasets for clients, focusing on making de-identified patient data accessible to AI developers. The individual will work to curate datasets by identifying patient subpopulations or disease cohorts and developing methods to extract information from multimodal healthcare data to support patient phenotyping. This work directly supports the team’s goal of delivering the highest-quality data possible to clients developing products that improve patient health.

This position exists to bridge the gap between raw clinical data and usable, high-quality datasets required for training advanced AI algorithms. The scientist will apply data expertise and programming skills to derive insights, enhance datasets based on specific use cases, and support the technical product team in advancing data-related offerings. It requires a proactive approach to learning new technologies while maintaining rigorous standards for data accuracy and integrity.

This role is suited for someone who is comfortable navigating massive, disorganized datasets and is eager to learn new environments and skills. A candidate who thrives on transforming complex clinical information into actionable data products and enjoys contributing to a small, ambitious team environment would perform well in this position.

What you will do

  • Develop Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Model (LLM), and other ML-based pipelines to abstract relevant labels from text-based healthcare data and store them in scalable data models.
  • Query complex source systems, such as EMRs and free-text clinical provider notes, to identify key data elements and create high-quality datasets for real-world evidence analyses.
  • Own data extraction, wrangling, labeling, and quality control tasks to create analytical datasets that include abstracted clinical concepts.
  • Stay current on the latest applied NLP and generative AI methods and proactively use these technologies where applicable.
  • Support the design, testing, validation, and merging of multimodal data structures from various source systems.
  • Develop code and documentation to deliver high-quality and HIPAA-compliant data products to customers on schedule.
  • Identify and resolve problems using domain knowledge and troubleshooting skills.
  • Summarize the complexity of abstraction methods and findings into clear explanations for diverse audiences.

What you need

  • An advanced degree in a quantitative field, such as Data Science, Biomedical Informatics, Computer Science, or Biostatistics, is required.
  • Candidates must possess at least two years of experience in data science and machine learning.
  • A minimum of two years of data science and machine learning experience is necessary for this role.
  • The candidate needs to have experience working with clinical and text-based data.
  • Proficiency in programming abilities is essential for developing data pipelines.
  • The role requires strong critical thinking skills to develop methodologies for data abstraction.
  • Experience in data extraction, wrangling, and quality control tasks is necessary.
  • The candidate should be comfortable managing and controlling large, complex datasets.
