Role Overview

Anthropic is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to set technical direction at the intersection of engineering and research on the Claude Code team. Key Responsibilities

Establish technical direction for evaluation systems, research infrastructure, and internal tooling across the Claude Code team.
Architect evaluation frameworks designed to measure model capabilities across diverse coding tasks and scale alongside the research roadmap.
Direct the design of infrastructure empowering researchers to run experiments at scale, driving foundational operational tradeoffs.
Identify high-leverage engineering investments proactively and guide them through to completion.
Serve as a vital technical bridge between product and research teams, translating ambiguous questions into durable engineering solutions.
Mentor fellow engineers, review technical designs, unblock peers, and exemplify high engineering standards.
Own critical systems end-to-end, covering everything from initial architecture through production reliability.

Requirements

Possess 10+ years of software engineering experience, featuring a proven track record operating as a Staff or Principal engineer (or equivalent) at a high-caliber organization.
Demonstrated history of architecting and owning complex, high-stakes systems such as pipelines, infrastructure, or platforms that manage significant state, logic, and multi-team usage.
Track record of defining technical direction through design docs and architectural decisions that shape organizational operations.
Capacity to thrive within high-intensity environments featuring rapid iteration cycles and open-ended problem solving.
Function as a power user of agentic coding tools with a deep comprehension of model capabilities and limitations.

Nice to Have

Experience designing or scaling evaluation frameworks for machine learning systems.
Background in reinforcement learning infrastructure or training systems.
Leadership experience in high-performance environments like trading firms, quantitative funds, frontier research labs, or fast-moving startups.
Familiarity with research computing, scientific infrastructure, or developer platforms at scale.
A strong quantitative foundation in mathematics, physics, or related fields.
Expertise working with Python and TypeScript.
